The March 28, 1994 Pearl Jam show at Bayfront Park, Miami FL was the first time I saw Pearl Jam and one of my most memorable concerts ever... There was an buzz in the air that I have only felt at a few concerts.

My first memory of the event was outside the amphitheater seeing a father with his daughters trying to buy tickets just before the show. His teenage daughter was on the ground crying "Eddie, Eddie" while his other daughter had tears running down her face as the father begged passerby's for tickets. They were so desperate for tickets, I briefly considered giving them mine.

Having been treated to an unexpected sound check - that was heard for blocks, I decided it best to hold on to my ticket! The show was delayed as Pearl Jam would not start the show with the AT&T banner on the stage. No one was allowed in the venue until the sign was covered. I was so anxious for the show to start, the delay seemed like an eternity. Once inside, I was horrified to see that a chain-link fence had been erected to separate the seats from the grassy hill of the amphitheater! I was going to be forced to watch my very first Pearl Jam concert through a chain fence!

I worked my way to the fence and within minutes felt and then saw it wavering as a thousand strong shook it. Within minutes the fence came down - first on one side. Then, like dominoes, it all went down and the masses once held back, pushed forward. I was one of them; it was scary, surreal and thrilling all at the same time. With the illumination of the full moon and without the fence as a barrier, I worked my way towards the front. Once there, I was shocked at how small the stage was. Then... with the opening notes of "Release" Pearl Jam had a fan for life. "Release" went into "Go" - forget it, it was a sucker punch that still gives me chills to hear to this day. They played every song I had hoped to hear and more. Towards the end of the show a small shower passed by as Pearl Jam was launching into "Garden." As one, the crowd raised their arms in welcome relief that the rain brought to the tightly packed, hot and sweaty crowd.

When the show was over I looked at at what appeared to be a war zone; there were torn flannels, abandoned shoes, garbage and various debris as well as a light steamy mist coming up from the ground due to the passing shower. The brand new 15 foot tall fence that had stretched over one hundred feel long at the start of the show was so smashed into the earth that you could hardly see it. With the weird outro music Pearl Jam was playing, it once again felt dreamlike and surreal. Reality struck as when we exited the amphitheater and saw dozens of police in full riot gear directing the masses. Apparently the amphitheater that only held 8,000 people attracted more than 10,000, and many of them tried to rush in.

I was so awestruck that I jumped in the car the next day and drove the four hours to St. Petersburg, Florida with the hope that I could beg or steal a ticket to see them again... ever so hopeful I'd not wind up like the girl I first saw laying on the ground crying.

MIAMI A sold-out rock concert turned ugly and dangerous Monday night when fans tore down fences, kicked and punched members of the security force and rushed into the Bayfront Park amphitheatre, all to be nearer to superstar rock band Pearl Jam.

Injuries and arrests were mostly minor and few, though City of Miami helicopters flew overhead and police eventually called in a riot squad to stand guard at the front of the building.
The crazed behavior of fans was at odds with the often introspective messages sung by the band - champions of offbeat, hard-edged alternative rock.

The five-man Seattle band, which has just stepped up to major headlining status, was to have played for about 8,000 fans - top capacity at the general admission, outdoor AT&T Amphitheater.

Yet more than 25,000 fans showed up and tried to barrel their way in, according to Miami Police estimates. Other estimates put the crowd at more than 10,000.

''It was mass hysteria,'' said fan Grant Lasher of Boca Raton.

Officials from Cellar Door Concerts, show promoter, said the band selected the venue for its off-the-beaten- path allure and general admission seating policy.

The group headed to St. Petersburg for an indoor concert Tuesday night. Next stop is Atlanta.
