NOTES:
Well it's my third festival in three weeks (and in the bigger picture, the 3rd of 4 festivals in 5 weeks) and I'm back in my home town of Napa to finally see, after 30 years, one of the defining bands of the 90's and of my youth, Pearl Jam! I can't believe it's taken me this long to finally see them, how embarrassing to admit. It's also the first of the "big 4" grunge bands I've gotten to see (2 of them of course being impossible to see, and the third, well I don't even count what they're doing now, but that's another story for another day), and overall, I must say that Eddie and company did not disappoint. EASILY the best set of the entire weekend/festival, and probably the best set/performance I've seen in the last couple of years if I'm being honest.
Two of the first three songs played were "Corduroy" and "Why Go", both of which I had been texting my friends about how badly I wanted to hear those this night and though realistically there might be a chance for (I would have loved to hear WMA and Chloe Dancer too, but I knew those were likely not happening). They played a lot of new songs of course, which was fine, as I think most sound fine, especially "Wreckage". The start of the encore was pretty cool given he busted out a solo rendition of "Last Kiss" and then invited Bradley Cooper on stage to perform what I can only guess is one of the hit songs from his film "A Star Is Born"? (I dunno for sure, I've never watched it). Bradlely later came back out for the final song, "Rockin' in the Free World" and participated in the tambourine throwing.
Overall, it was worth battling the heat all day at the stage, and a couple of assholes in the crowd for this set, as it was everything I was hoping it would be. Bottlerock (and Napa in general) definitely have a lot wrong with it, but some things they just execute right and perfectly, and Pearl Jam headlining was one of them.
