Peter Brötzmann Chicago Tentet (+1)
Internationales Jazzfestival, Saalfelden (Austria)
August 26, 2001
*retracked RESEED* of tom_phillips' 'Definitive Edition' Remaster (a Matrix of 2 FM sources and SBD) + remaining tracks from SBD source
This concert by Peter Brötzmann's Chicago tentet (+1) was seeded in various versions before here on Dime, and for this reseed, I made some further track index alterations. This upload features also the remaining tracks from a seeded soundboard source, which were not used in the remastering process.
The first upload (torrent #108332) of this concert was by tom_phillips, from a BBC FM broadcast
original info:
Source: BBC FM > Philips CDR-570 audio CD-RW recorder
Transfer EAC > Nero 6 > Flac Frontend (level 6)
Editing: Fade in / out, removal of some track markers
Quality: A+ some FM hiss but not too bad
"A blistering set from Saalfelden 2001 by the Brötzmann Tentet plus one, recorded in great clarity although with a bit of FM hiss".
Setlist (tom_phillips initial version):
07.17 ? Stonewater
08.29 ?
15.30 ?
06.47 ?
06.51 Makapoor
00.33 Applause > Band Members
I (Neetelbaers) visited this concert, and whilst sitting at the front, I could remember that the first tune featured a huge box, which was positioned right before me in the front of the stage, covering up almost half of the participants, which I found a bit annoying. After thie first tune, the box was quickly removed though. Later it turned out that this was Fred Lomberg-Holm's "Lightbox", which is used as a sort of prompter (for those of you familiar with John Zorn's Cobra settings).
Noticing the setlist by tom_phillips, my first assumption was that the first track was a part of Stonewater (which was the info I gave to Tom), but after downloading, it appeared to it was that particular Lightbox piece. Tracks 02-04 all were part of Stonewater for sure, but the first part of it, which featured some vocals from Hamid Drake, was not broadcasted by the BBC.
It was therefor that I decided to post my FM broadcast, taken from Austrian Radio Ö1 shortly after the Festival (torrent #108379) which didn't include the Lightbox piece, in order to present a version which had both the Lightbox piece as well as the previously "missing" first part of Stonewater. Also, the Austrian broadcast had some announcements by Brötzmann.
To minimize the download efforts for the Dime community, I used tom_phillips version (mine had a bit more FM hiss anyway) as a basis, in which the additional tracks were merged, explaining the somewhat odd numbering of the tracks.
Set List (Neetelbaers (first) update):
No01 unknown 07:31 (track length edit)
No01b unknown 06:45 (could be counted as part of Stone/Water as well)
No02 Stone/Water part 1 08:16 (track length edit)
No03 Stone/Water part 2 15:30
No04 Stone/Water part 3 6:47
No05a Tuning In > Audience 0:53
No05b Peter Brötzmann band introduction 2:08
No05c Makapoor (track length edit) 5:58
No06 Applause > Band Members 00:33
Tracks No03, 04 and 06 were not altered for this upgrade
sources used for this upload:
Track 01, 02, 03, 04, 05a, 05c, 06 (according to tom_phillips):
Source: BBC FM > Philips CDR-570 audio CD-RW recorder
Transfer EAC > Nero 6 > Flac Frontend (level 6)
Editing: Fade in / out, removal of some track markers
Quality: A+ some FM hiss but not too bad
Additional edits in tom_phillips' part: track length alterations for Tracks 01
and 02
Track 01b, 05b (according to Neetelbaers):
Source: Radio Ö1 (Austria) > cassette > Philips CDR-770 audio CD-RW recorder
Transfer EAC > Flac Frontend (level 6)
Quality: A- some more FM hiss compared to tom_phillips' version but also not too
bad indeed
To make things even more complicated, a third version, posted by MisterBear (torrent #108554) popped up. This one came from a Soundboard source.
soundboard > ? > cdr > eac > flac frontend > flac
Setlist (MisterBear SBD upload) (59:07):
01. unknown title (7:19)
02. unknown title (6:15)
03. Stonewater (37:24)
04. band introductions (2:01)
05. Makapoor (6:06)
(track timings by Neetelbaers)
It appeared that track 01 was the Lightbox piece. Track 02 was neither broadcasted by BBC or Ö1 and therefor was another "missing link". Track 03 was the complete "Stonewater", here posted as a single track, which started off with the Drake vocal part (Part I) (included in the Ö1 broadcast but omitted in the BBC version).
Of course, having three different versions of the same concert isn't very helpful so Tom made yet another, as he called it 'Definitive Edition' version (torrent#113111):
original info:
1. tom_phillips id#108332: FM stereo, good dynamics / ambience, a little hiss
2. Neetelbaers id#108379: tom_phillips FM stereo version + 1 extra (more noisy) track + applause/intros
3. MisterBear id#108554: SBD with one further extra track, very clear & no noise, but
recorded at extremely low level, dry near-mono mix, no applause/ambience, a less
involving listen
We've had 3 different posts of this concert, all of which have their positive
and negative points, so by special request from 'ubu' I have matrixed all three into what I
hope you will agree is the 'definitive edition'.
In order to keep download size, I have based this on Neetelbaers post, but in
order to edit in the extra SBD track, I had to revert to my original tracks 01&02. Then I
copied applause segments from these tracks into the new SBD track 01a and also a modified track
01b where I edited in the first 0.58 and last 0.20 of the SBD (where it and the original are
near mono) and then 5.38min of Neetelbaers track whilst the taragato plays, where noise is
not audible.
I also fixed the extremely low levels and applied some gentle EQ and reverb to
make SBD parts match the ambience of the rest, Now you have the good parts of all of them
nicely integrated together (...)
Set List (61.04) (tom_phillips 'Definitive Edition' Matrix)
No01 unknown 07:17 (back to original No01)
No01a Unknown 06:27 (new track from SBD)
No01b Stone/Water part 1 06:56 (modified No01b)
No02 Stone/Water part 2 08:16 (back to original No02)
No03 Stone/Water part 3 15:30
No04 Stone/Water part 4 06:47
No05a Tuning In > Audience 00:53
No05b Peter Brötzmann band introduction 02:08
No05c Makapoor 05:58
No06 Applause > Band Members 00:33 (modified to fade out nicely)
Tracks No03,04,05a,05b,05c were not altered for this upgrade
So the rather odd numbering was maintained to enlighten the download of the concert with the additional track for those who already had the updated Neetelbaers version.
However, after having burned this on CDR for my own archive, after some years I've decided to make some changes in the track lengths: I found a minor mistakes in one of the transitions between the various tracks (not exactly Sector Boundary Errors), also I believe that it is possible to index the titles more logically. The tom_phillips' Matrix version had some indices in the middle of the audience cheers, but I always put as much of the audience as possible at the end of each track. Also, in Stonewater, I changed the positions of the indices at some points were a new solo or riff took off.Actually, Stonewater is one composition, so the initial track indices were arbitrary in the first place.
I made no further adjustments to the sound characteristics: TomP's efforts into this matter were highly appreciated and satisfactory
CD1 (Neetelbaers *retracked RESEED* of tom_phillips' 'Definitive Edition' (=tpDE))
01. Light Box (Fred Lonberg-Holm) (07:30)
02. Unknown title (06:27)
03. Stone/Water part 1 (06:42)
04. Stone/Water part 2 (08:13)
05. Stone/Water part 3 (15:29)
06. Stone/Water part 4 (07:43)
07. Peter Brötzmann band introduction (02:08)
08. Makapoor (06:03)
09. Applause > Band Members (00:27)
total time (60:48)
changes made:
- 01. Added title, added audience from beginning of 02tpDE
- 02. Audience from beginning was partly a duplication of the audience from the end of track 01tpDE, so audience from beginning of track was relocated to end of track 01tpDE. Also added part of audience from beginning of track 03tpDE to end of track02tpDE
- 03. Added part of audience from beginning of track 03tpDE to end of track 02tpDE. Since audience cheers at end of track 03tpDE ends abruptly, this was faded out
- 04. Last seconds of track 04tpDE (start of solo blow) moved to beginning of track 05tpDE
- 05. Added last seconds of track 04tpDE to beginning of track 05tpDE. Last seconds of track 05tpDE (starting of bass riff) moved to beginning of track 06tpDE
- 06. Added last seconds of track 05tpDE to beginning of track 06tpDE. Added contents of track 07tpDE to end of track 06tpDE
- 07. No changes made
- 08. Added first few seconds of applause from begin of track 10tpDE to end of track 09tpDE
- 09. Removed first seconds of applause from track 10tpDE
Note: The title Stone/Water is sometimes also spelled as "Stonewater"
On CD2 of my upload, I have added those titles from the Soundboard source which were not used by tom_phillips for his Matrix. This gives you for example the possibility to compare the differences between FM and SBD versions. Also it presents the title "Stonewater" as a single piece.
CD2 (SBD versions)
01. Light Box (Fred Lonberg-Holm) (7:12)
02. (title, merged into Matrix version, now omitted)
03. Stonewater (parts 1 to 4) (37:19)
05. Makapoor (5:44)
total time (50:27)
