boombox's notes december 2024:
I have been following Troy Redfern for a while, but this was the first time I had seen him live. The abuse he gives his vintage resonator has to be seen to be believed - if you like your blues loud and swampy, this guy may be for you. Good as he was, I felt he was trying a little too hard though - one or two slower numbers would have given us a better showcase of his talents. As for the headliner, he can perhaps be summed up in one word only - Wow! The legacy of Jimi Hendrix and Steve Ray Vaughan is well and truly alive in Mr Sayce. A lot of the set was pretty high octane strat-shredding stuff, but he is not a bad vocalist either and the emotion in his tribute to Jeff Healey was evident in the room - you could almost hear a pin drop when he dropped the volume during the extended solo, so wrapped in the song was the audience. This was probably one of my gigging highlights in 2024 and I will be getting tickets the moment they come out for his next tour.

It took my ears nearly four days to recover from this gig as it was LOUD!! Despite that, the rig coped well. I did have to repair about a dozen minor clipping events during Troy's set as Nicky was really hitting those drums, but I reduced the gain for the following set and got the levels just about right. If you listen closely to this at volume with headphones, there a few bits of very minor saturation from the floor toms in both sets. I have reduced the volume of a few enthusiastic clappers and a nearby whoo whooer and removed a brief interruption when someone spoke to me during the applause, which is impossible to notice now. It is very much a small club type sounding recording, but will serve as a good enough example, I hope, to encourage others to see both acts live.
