OK I have to explain my reason for transferring this tape when I know it is inferior to tapes already available.

This show has a lot of flaws that occurred as it was being recorded. A crying child and a parent scolding him are very near the mics. Mic bumps and movements are common. Circulating copies of this show have had many of these flaws fixed. On any tapes I can find in circulation the part of Shine On where the child is crying has been repaired by removing the channel with the kid in it and replacing it with the other channel. There is a story going around that the child died and he was removed from the recording out of respect, but I don't know if that's an urban legend or not. Most likely he was just removed because he was annoying and distracting. I could detail a lot of other fixes that have been done to the various tapes, but that would take too much time and is irrelevant to this release. If you want a copy of this show that is fixed up real nice look for the one that Jim Fisheye did back in 2011. Jim really knows what he is doing with ProTools and his releases are alway a pleasure to listen to.

This, on the other hand, is a raw and unrepaired transfer from an unknown generation tape and is not retouched. [A little on this: The source tape that claims to be second generation from the master reels has a lot of broadband hiss on it. It seems to those of us in the PF community that this claimed 2nd gen tape is actually more than 2nd gen. This tape spawned two copies that are the source for all subsequent copies. Speculation is that the tape claiming to be first gen that was copied to make the circulation masters was actually much more than first gen. This makes nearly every tape out there third gen for sure, and likely more. On this copy I can hear at least 3 generations of hiss stack up in the breaks (you can hear this at the end of You Gotta Be Crazy), the first of which is the original with all the broadband noise. I'd personally guess this tape to be about 4th-6th gen from the master.] All the flaws and voices that annoy everyone are still there. The child crying and being scolded during the first part of Shine On (starting at 6:55 and lasting til 10:40) is still there. I was asked by Quentin to circulate this version with all the bumps and warts so the original content, good or bad as it may be, would not be lost to time. With this version I did the exact opposite of what I normally do and didn't fix or EQ a thing.

Very little has been done to this recording. It is nearly exactly as it came off the tape with a couple of exceptions: the high end from 10khz and up has been reduced to attenuate the hiss up there. No audible music content is contained in this range as it was lost in the tape generations. No EQing was done to the music itself or any frequency content below 10khz. The changes in quality between the various pieces that make up this tape, from the cut 2:40 before the end of Shine On through the middle of Money for example, were like that on the original tape. The various parts of the recording were at different speeds as well, so this might be composited from more than one tape from different generations, or the azimuth wasn't corrected when the various tapes were dubbed during one generation or another. The speed corrections to the various pieces are the other mastering alteration made to this transfer.

the tape sides were like this:

Side 1:

Raving and Drooling
You Gotta Be Crazy
(cut)
Shine On You Crazy Diamond Part 1
Have a Cigar (cut off)
(end of tape side)

Side 2:

Have a Cigar (backs up to the start of the song)
Shine On You Crazy Diamond Part 2
(cut)
Shine On You Crazy Diamond Part 2 (conclusion. Faster and duller sound)
(cut)
Speak To Me
Breathe
On The Run
Time
Breathe
The Great Gig in the Sky
Money (half)
(cut)

Side 3:

Money (picks up about 15 seconds before side 2 ended)
Us and Them (up to "Haven't you heard/It's a battle of words")
(cut)
Us and Them (from sax solo onward. Small part missing from this cut, likely on the original master)
Any Colour You Like
(cut in first note of Brain Damage)
Brain Damage (cut in song near end of second verse that seem to be from way back, possibly in the original master)
Eclipse
(cut)
Echoes (1st 15:44)
(cut)

Side 4:

The rest of Echoes (small cut after the seagull section)

The cuts that had redundant information surrounding them, likely to alter the format of the show from fitting 90 minute tapes to making it fit 100 minute tapes, have been spliced together. The ones with missing information are still blatant.
