Date question:
Notes from Bert: "According to some sources the show was originally scheduled on the 14th and postponed because of heavy rain
but no real evidence has surfaced backing this up, the actual date of the show may have been the 14th.
Glenn Povey seems to put it firmly at the 14th in his 'The Complete Pink Floyd' book released in 2016 and quotes a review in
a local newspaper of an attendee of the show with no mention of a postponement."
So, the date of this show is still an open question, but the 14th seems the most likely. I have included a ticket stub for the
show which backs up that the show was scheduled for the 14th, with the 15th being a potential makeup date in the event of rain.
Genghis looked up the historical rainfall for Jersey City, which shows 0.14'' of rain on the 13th and no rain on the 14th.
There was 2.20'' of rain on the 12th so we can speculate that perhaps the show might have been postponed to allow the field to
dry from that previous rainfall - it seems unlikely to me though.
Notes:
This excellent recording was made by Barry Glassberg, a well-regarded taper who made many other great recordings in the 70s/80s
in the New York area. It is a mono recording. It has long been recognized by listeners that the channels of the original audio
from this master version are inverted, resulting in phase cancellation. If uncorrected, this leads to a thin sound because the
low frequency output from a set of stereo speakers will destructively interfere with each other. Inverting one of the channels
is a simple fix for this issue (in this case, I inverted the left).
It has been suggested that one of the channels could simply be removed because this is a mono recording. However, the audio is
not completely identical on the left and right channels so that would remove some information. The right channel leads the
left by about 1-3 samples - I have not adjusted that because it's so small.
During Shine On You Crazy Diamond Parts VI-IX from approx. 6:50 - 7:40, around 10:40, and around 11:20, there are digital
glitches that make clicking/crackling sounds. I manually repaired the glitches, taking care to pinpoint the digital errors
and not the actual recorded signal. Digital glitches are still evident but it's much better now.
Speed correction notes:
The original audio was slow, but the necessary correction varied. LPP adjusted the speed of this source in 2006 for the "Faster
Jersey" remaster, but way over-compensated. The band is arguably playing a bit on the slow side (tempo) for parts of this show,
which might have made it sound slower to LPP than it actually is. I speed corrected using the keyboards as the primary
reference point to bring the audio to standard A4=440 Hz tuning. For the speed-varying section during You Gotta Be Crazy, I
used a series of constant adjustments of 0.1% instead of a sliding stretch.
There are cuts in the recording after:
-Shine On You Crazy Diamond Parts VI-IX
-The Great Gig In The Sky
-Eclipse
Set 1: Raving And Drooling - Shine On You Crazy Diamond Parts VI-IX
00:00.0 - 17:13.6: +1.0%
17:13.6 - 18:03.5: +1.1%
18:03.5 - 18:53.1: +1.2%
18:53.1 - 19:38.5: +1.3%
19:38.5 - 20:28.7: +1.4%
20:28.7 - 21:15.5: +1.5%
21:15.5 - 57:47.8 (end): +1.6%
Speak To Me - The Great Gig In The Sky: +2.1%
Money - Echoes: +1.0%
I did this work in Audacity and exported the results as retracked FLAC files. I used TLH to fix SBE and create a checksum.
