MISC NOTES:
Not my first time seeing The Pixies, but certainly my first time seeing them (or ANYONE for that matter) at Strathmore! The venue is less than 10 years old and was built to be the home of the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra, the National Philharmonic Orchestra, and other such classical music acts. It seemed a very odd choice for this booking, however as both a Pixies fan and a fan of live music, I figured I would take this opportunity to kill two birds with one stone, by seeing both a band I love and a new venue! Strathmore is renowned for its phenomenal acoustics, but all the same I decided to run cardioid instead of omnis on account of my assumption that a room built for classical music may still have a bit of "boom" to it. I am happy that I did end up going for the cards.
I have a little bit of phasing and crackling in the first half of the first song-- there were a couple of late arriving patrons who pushed past my stealthily arranged rig. The rest of the recording is free of any distraction.
The Pixies were a band in turmoil at the bass position at the time of this show. Founding member Kim Deal left The Pixies in June 2013 and was replaced by Kim Shattuck two weeks later for the sake of the impending tour. Shattuck played only a few months with The Pixies and was dismissed in late November 2013. I made this tape less than two months after Shattuck left, and by this time The Pixies had filled the position with Paz Lenchantin. I had hoped that after Shattuck's dismissal that Deal might be brought back into the fold, however I was pleasantly surprised with Lenchantin's performance and she shared a seemingly pleasent chemistry with the other band members.
The show was opened by "Fidlar," whom I also recorded.
