Lineage:

Recording location (I think) 8 rows up off the floor facing stage dead center live in the Pacific Coliseum (was the stage at center? more amphitheatre style?) > probably a Sony PC-62 mic in hat (handheld in soundcheck) > Radio Shack Gold 6 foot 3.5mm stereo extension cord > Sony WM D3 Professional Cassette Walkman CrO2/Metal Rec on Dolby B on > Denon MG-X Metal 100 cassette masters in ceramic composite shells > dry storage for 14 years plus

Playback in September 2010 with Tascam 202mkII (azimuth re-aligned to best approximately track this tape) Metal Play on Dolby off > Radio Shack Gold rca to 3.5mm stereo plug > Radio Shack Gold 3.5mm stereo extension 6 foot (also used as mic extension during recording!) > Soundblaster Audigy 24 bit 96 khz > Wavelab 5.01b (transfer capture and track splitting)

Mastering and processing (as applicable):

1) 16bit 44.1khz version: Raw master transfer split 24/96 files were batch processed and therefore "Mastered" in Wavelab 5.01b: Stereo channel inversion was corrected (stereo mic was wired backwards or upside down), Waves Q-10 EQ (mostly a lows boost for guts and highs enhancement for more sparkle with a small upper-mids dip to cut out the ringing PA horn), and a peak limiter to -.01 db for safety (still plenty of headroom and no compression) > intermediate hi-res 24/96 processed files downsampled to 24 bit 44.1 khz with SoX ReSampler via Foobar2000 (96 to 44.1 khz very High Quality Passband 95.2% Phase response 25%) > intermediate 24/44.1 downsampled processed files then dithered to 16 bit 44.1 khz CD ready files with iZotope RX Advanced (MBit+ Ultra noise shaping High Dither amount) > Final 16/44.1 CD ready "Mastered" processed wav files converted to FLAC8 via Trader's Little Helper

or,

2) 24bit 96khz version: Raw hi-res 24/96 digital original master tape transfer files marked and tagged on exact second marks to prevent sector boundary errors with Wavelab 5.01b > individual song files auto split on markers with Wavelab 5.01b > Master clone capture unaltered (including original channel inversion) @24/96 track split wav files converted to FLAC8 with Trader's Little Helper

Notes:

In the days before my trip to Vancouver to again see Primus, I finally decided to revisit these tapes. Of the 100+ shows I think I've recorded, this one is definitely in my top 10 for sound quality with a good performance! I haven't transferred that many of my shows due to, well, life I guess, but I want to one day have them all done and posted and shared. It was a fun day and a great show. I went with a friend who helped me a bit with making this tape happen. I'm very glad I have this recording which I proudly now finally get to share with you all!

We were early to the Pacific Coliseum that day, having come over from Victoria on an early morning ferry to go take in as much of the P.N.E. Fair admission that came included with the tickets to the show. As we wandered around the fairgrounds including the Pacific Coliseum, we found many large doors were wide open, and nobody was around. We heard voices and we were curious, so we followed the sounds inside. There still didn't seem to be a soul around, so we (as curious individuals) continued deeper withing the cavernous coliseum. Eventually as we wandered through dressing room hallways and under seating bleachers the soundcheck seemed to be beginning, so I grabbed my gear and discretely set it up. While not 100% sure who is all playing (is it all Primus or some roadies or Mike Watt's band members as well in places?) as we didn't quite see the soundcheck but we sure heard it. There's two soundcheck jams that are not exactly full on songs but are completely different! I'd call jam number one: "Screw You! You Should Be Shot!" and the other second jam: "You Don't Have To Tell Us Twice!". What are these curious pieces? Listen at your own risk!

There's the last track of Mike Watt's set recorded next on the tape included here. I believe Les came out and played on it, but I can't actually completely remember now if he really did. I've left a couple ambient audient clips before the show in the fileset, so you can hear my mic check. If the left and right announcements are correct you are listeneing to the properly "Mastered" slightly EQ'd CD ready version (or your headphones are on backwards!) and if the stereo channels are inverted you are listening to the hi-res raw master clone flat transfer version (or the headphone switcheroo thing happened again)...

I believe I recorded this with the Sony stereo PC-62 mic that comes with the WM D3 professional cassette walkman. In fact, I think this is right after I bought a new PC-62 mic as a part to replace a broken one. I may be wrong, and this could be recorded with an ECM-907 or even an ECM DS70P stereo mic, as I only briefly used the replacement PC-62, the ECM-907, and finally the ECM-DS70P in rapid succession, and I can't exactly remember the timeline anymore. The master tapes themselves are pretty much top-of-the-line quality. They were pretty expensive but they still sound great!

I did my best to match the azimuth tape head alignment of this playback deck to how it is recorded on the tape, but the heads of my old WM D3 walkman floated a bit from time to time. Sometimes I think it drifted during the show, recording a tape with a bit of a sometimes shifted tracking. I set the playback heads at a good average point, and at times it sounds perfect, but others it sounds a bit off center.

Depending on whether you have the CD friendly 16 bit 44.1 khz "Mastered" version or the raw transfer un-mastered 24 bit 96 khz copy, you might want to know I corrected the mic channel inversion problem and basically fattened up the low end and sweetened the highs and cut a bit of the lower-mids / upper-lows with Waves Q-10 EQ and hard limited the peaks to -0.01db for the properly mastered "RM" version for 16/44.1 CD ready files. The 24/96 version is a straight flat transfer no processing no EQ no channel correction - they are backwards. The un-mastered hi-res copy also sounds much more mid-rangey with much less lower bass response due to the mic used.

I hope you enjoy this classic master tape! It isn't perfect but its pretty good if I do say so myself (and I just did). Please distribute freely - do not sell. Do not ReMaster the 16bit 44.1 khz version - if you must tinker with the sound use the raw master 24/96 version. I'd like a copy of what you're doing to my recording if you alter it (please). Only pervert these files to lossy eMPty3 files for your own personal use - do not distribute as lossy eMPty3 files, please! I love comments, reviews, stories, whatever in response so if you like the show and appreciate it, by all means let me know. Do you have pictures of this show? I'd love to get them. Mine didn't turn out at all. Please feel free to make coverart, and kindly email me a copy. Thanks.
