THE STORY OF THIS RECORDING AND IT'S HISTORY as told by the Taper himself~ "Herb Smith"
In the 70s German radio station WDR III, based in Cologne had a two-week late Saturday night format dedicated to all forms of minority tastes of music.
There were Indian Ragas, Contemporary Classic, Free Jazz, Singer/Songwriter, Electronic Music, Folk Music from Transylvania and KRAUT-ROCK.
All music was performed and broadcasted live from the "Grosse Sendesaal", a concert hall with a capacity of 700 people and fantastic acoustics,
integrated in the broadcasting building of WDR Radio, known as the Heritage building nowadays.
As far as I recall I first heard about this radio show in January 1972, 4 weeks ahead of the GILA show, which was the first concert of this kind I recorded from my parents radio.
Others followed, like EILIFF, KRAAN, VIRUS, AGITATION FREE, KARTHAGO, TRIUMVIRAT, ACHIM, REICHEL & MACHINES and SKALDOWIE ( Poland).
Most of them I recorded, some of these have been released on the GARDEN OF DELIGHTS label, some I unfortunately have missed.
Strange enough only very few Kraut-rock fans must have been aware of this wonderful radio show.
When entering "Nachtmusik im WDR" to Google only very few rock related links appear.
When licensing my recordings from WDR for release on CD, it turned out that hardly any of those concerts had survived in the stations archive.
Worst of all, most of them never had been taped at all. Broadcasted and lost....
In January 1975, RANDY PIE were scheduled to have their Nachtmusik appearance.
I never was a great fan of this band, but they were quite popular at that time with some airplay of their hit-single "HIGHWAY DRIVER".
As it was a live concert I decided to give a listen to their performance and make a recording.
And a good decision it was, the band was backed by "Peter Herbolzheimer Rhythm Combination & Brass" for this special concert.
They were a famous Big Band in the 70s, which added a new dimension to Randy Pie`s sound.
Never before and after I have heard such a good performance from RANDY PIE!
I wonder weather the original band members have a recording of this rare event?
If not, I hope they will enjoy it 38 years later .
This concert was hosted by legendary WINFRIED TRENKLER, without him many bands in the 70s I never would have heard of.
You can hear his voice in the outro. Many thanks to him for all the wonderful music he played in his programs.
