RAY WYLIE HUBBARD wsg. Slaid Cleaves & Carrie Newcomer
- November 09, 1997 -
Aula KHG, Mettmann, Germany
** SOUNDBOARD DAT-master, MWM 0150 **
>> A TRUE TEXAS LEGEND WITH A FANTASTIC BAND - TERRY "Buffalo" WARE on guitars -
AMAZING QUALITY - UNCIRCULATED << with samples

Preliminary remark 1:

for one thing:

A very special concert.
Final gig of this night.
A funny one too...
RWH in great mood...
Fantastic stories...
Excellent music...
Incredible coversongs...
Outstanding band...
His two labelmates onstage...
Incommensurable recording...
Shivers down your spine...

for another thing:

A disconsolate task.
Yesterday my neighbor Guenther S.
passed away. A bearlike man, tall
and awesome. Although he was older,
he was never precocious. Was a
friend of my dad, knew him for
my whole life, and, born in the
50ies, that is damn long. Remember
when he shouldered me as a small
kid...we became friends...kinda uncle.
Always interested in what i was
doing...in the good way...
Always supportive, always friendly,
always helpful. He was one of
those legendary truck drivers,
a man like John Wayne.
Just without colts...

Most recently talked on Tuesday.
About this hard winter, the cold
and the snow...and about next spring,
the sun, the light, warmness, green trees...

I’ll bid the years goodbye, you cannot steal them
You cannot turn the circles of the sun
You cannot count the miles until you feel them
You cannot hold a lover that is gone

Snowin' on Raton
come morning I'll be through them hills and gone

This one is for you - farewell Guenter...R.I.P.

Preliminary remark 3:

As far as I know NONE of this recording was ever used commercially ;-)

This upload here comes directly from the "Men With Microphones" archives.
"MWM" started in the 70ies in South Germany with analog recording equipment,
and at least two of them are still recording sometimes (since the 90ies on DAT,
and, lazy as we are, since lately with small, handheld WAV-recorders on SD-cards).
The "MWM" startet as a project of friends sharing their hobbies together. But by
reason of jobs, partners and other interests the circle of all involved shrinked.

Ray Wylie Hubbard
born 13 November 1946 in Soper, Oklahoma,
is an American country music singer and songwriter.
He also is a true living legend and a gifted entertainer,
both with his music and his incommensurable stories...

Please check my other RWH-uploads,
if you like to read more about him...

About the recording:

The extremely successful European spring tour 1997 - Ray Wylie Hubbard was touring
with his partner in crime, Terry "Buffalo" Ware - in front of mighty impressed,
respectful cheering but for all that extremely enthusiastic audiences - attracted
a lot of attention at the Rounder Records headquarters. So they deceided to send them
back later the same year, together with two befriended labelmates and a fantastic band:

"The Travelling Troubadours Revue 1997", with

Slaid Cleaves

- was touring to promote his first national release,
No Angel Knows (1997) on Philo/Rounder, which shot to
#2 on the Gavin Americana radio chart after it's release,
garnering critial praise nationwide and leading to the
start of Slaid's recent worldwide touring schedule.

"He's got a melodic sense to match his narrative skills
and he draws as much from Rockabilly and Hank Williams
as he does from Vintage Bob Dylan....his sharp perspectives
and sharper hooks distinguish him almost as much as his name."
- Peter Margasak, Chicago Reader (Critic's Choice)

Carrie Newcomer

- Carrie first gained attention singing and writing in the
folk band Stone Soup, they recorded three albums together.
She uses styles other than folk, such as jazz, blues and rock,
and on this tour she was promoting her fourth solo album on
Philo/Rounder, My Father's Only Son (1996).

"She has such an incredible knack for finding the extraordinary
in the 98 percent or more of life that is utterly ordinary. And
when life's amazing two percent kicks in, Carrie captures that
too. Her music is always tuneful, and Carrie's voice is a most
amazing instrument, full of warmth and comfort and yet so steady
and strong. Carrie Newcomer leaves tracks across the hearts of
listeners - those she's touched already, and those she's bound
to touch with this disc. You are bearing witness, as she sings
here, to a journey that's been well traveled."
- Marc D. Allan

Ray Wylie Hubbard

Oklahoma-born singer-songwriter Ray Wylie Hubbard started out as a
folk artist in the 1960s and later made fast friends with hitmakers
Michael Martin Murphey and Jerry Jeff Walker during the nascent years
of the '70s' Outlaw Country movement. Walker covered Hubbard's
"Up Against the Wall Redneck Mothers" on his popular Viva Terlingua
record, securing Hubbard's fate as a cult artist. After disappearing
from the music scene for a lengthy period of time and struggling with
personal problems, he re-emerged with not only his stellar songwriting
intact, but also a distinctly inventive fingering and bottleneck style.

Today Ray Wylie Hubbard is an elder statesman of the Texas music scene.
From New Braunfels, Texas, Hubbard hosts a Tuesday night radio show in
called "Roots & Branches". This program promotes new and established
Americana artists. Like some other performers in his genre, he is perhaps
as popular in Europe as in the US - and he brought his third album after
his comeback (1992) with him, which was his first Philo/Rounder release,
the beautiful Dangerous Spirits (1997).

PLUS their fantasic tour band, led
by another legendary guitar player:

Terry "Buffalo" Ware,
Jack Helsley, and
Jamie Reed.

This here is the third and final act of one of those nights,
Ray Wylie Hubbard, accompanied by the band. And for a couple
songs his partners on this tour accompanied him onstage...

An extremely funny and laid back concert, close to the tour-end,
lots of great stories and typical Ray banters, with a beautiful
set, ending with an incredible all-artists version of Townes'
"Snowin' On Raton" - it will send you shivers down your spine,
you'll get goosebumps all over, be assured you have enough tissues
nearby. Both encores following are simply awesome...
nothing more left to say except:

GET THIS MONSTER HERE - NOW !!

Another masterpiece by our friend
Frizze - one person on his own:
concert promoter, sound engineer and
concert taper - for sure another living legend.

Mettmann is a Rhenish town in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany, with
a population of around 40.000. It is the administrative centre of
the district of Mettmann, Germany's most densely populated rural
district. The town lies east of Düsseldorf and west of Wuppertal.
In the nearby Neanderthal, in the summer of 1856, quarry workers
discovered the fossilised remains of what became known as the
Neanderthal man or Homo neanderthalensis in Feldhof cave.

My dear buddy Ken TheCommish usually writes (and hey, he's damn right):
If you decide to download this show, won't you please consider posting a comment
on the show's board? It only takes a moment, and believe me, it takes A LOT longer
to prepare/upload a show for others to enjoy than it does to download and run...

You know, our friend Dave T says: "There's always more to come..."
And i'll promise you to keep MY tapes coming...
