Renaissance : The Lostbrook Tape Series - Volume 24

Renaissance was very popular in NY in the mid 70’s and
it seemed like they were always in town. This was my
eighth Renaissance concert, but the memories are jumbled
and there may have been more. For some reason, my friends
and I made it a personal challenge to sneak backstage at
Renaissance concerts. I think we were not-so-secretly in
love with Annie Haslam. I don’t believe we made it backstage
this particular evening, but it’s possible. The band always
recognized us and would say, “You guys again?” or “How did
you do it this time?” My favorite Renaissance memory is
from St. John’s University in April 1976 (sorry, no tape)
when my friend Paul and I were volunteer roadies. We were
asked to hold a ladder in front of Annie during the soundcheck
while the spotlights were being adjusted. Annie was singing
Black Flame, possibly my favorite Renaissance song, inches
from our faces as we gazed at her lovingly. Suddenly, she
stopped singing and the lighting guy came down the ladder and
whispered, “Don’t stare at her, she doesn’t like it.” The
soundcheck continued with Paul and I looking at each other
through the rungs of the ladder, trying to sneak sideways
glances at Annie and trying not to laugh at this preposterous
situation. At the City Center, we were ordinary patrons in
the fifth row of the lower balcony. I’ve searched for other
sources of this concert but have yet to find one. Enjoy!
