Some technical notes:
The first 7 tracks in this show sound relatively awful. Time has blocked many memories of this show for me, but if I recall, the show was REALLY packed, and we were too close to the stage and hearing mostly audio from the stage monitors in the beginning, until we relized how bad it sounded (listen to 19 year old me say "Sounds like shit" at 1:48 into T2) and decide to move back -- but it was difficult given how crowded it was in the venue!

You can hear a slow gradual audio improvement by the time you get halfway into track 3 with a big improvement 53 sec into T4, after which you can hear me moving around trying to get in a better position for a little bit.....

Much of T5 starting 1:17 is lost to my jockeying into a better position, and you can hear me continuing to find my place all through T6-T7 and starting with T8, things settle in nicely sound-wise.

After "Achin' To Be" you can hear someone onstage say "Aw fuck it, let's just jam..."

Taper notes:
Some of my archival releases are simply straightforward -- pull something out of my collection, transfer it, master it, track it, post it. On the other hand, there are releases like this one (BARN153) that come with an interesting story or 2, or could really fill small novelette with details about them.

Let's start with the origins of this recording: This is by a long shot the earliest vintage of any recording I've released (previous being '92-'93). At the time I was a lowly freshman at Rutgers, and was convinced to come see a show on campus by this band, The Replacements, that I really didn't know by a friend Brian Reiss who was really connected with their hometown of Minneapolis. Of course I was going to bring my recording gear, which at the time was simply a recently-purchased (the summer before) Aiwa recording walkman and small clip-on Aiwa stereo mic which I would clip to the front of a painter's cap with a hole punched in it. Not exactly a pro set-up, but hey, it was portable and easy to sneak in, and it was within my budget!

The night of the show, Brian and I got into a very long line, only to be told that the show was very very oversold and that we, being in the 2nd half of the line, could only get into the late show. OK. So we waited an hour and change in line and get inside, only to find it still incredibly packed! I get set up, the show starts, and wow was the sound awful from where we were standing! At the time I didn't know much about "sweet spots" in venues or have any good sense of where to stand in a room to make a good recording. If I recall (and it's not easy -- I mean this was *24* years ago...) we were just too close and were just hearing the shitty sound from the monitors (you can hear the band complaining about how bad the monitors sounded from the stage too). A few songs in, you can actually hear me say, very quietly to Brian, "Sounds like shit", after which we worked hard to get in a better sounding spot. Crowded as it was, it wasn't easy, and it took us a while to relocate -- so the sound goes really wonky for a while. Anyway, my point here is that the recording sounds very dicey for a while for the first ## tunes, but then gets a lot clearer.

This was a band famous (infamous?) for getting trashed onstage, and whether they were actually drunk onstage or just playing the part, they certainly got loose about half way through the show, tossing in oddball covers like "Hello Dolly", "Cruella Deville", "Around & Around". Also of note is a Paul Westerberg solo rendition of "Answering Machine", an early performance of the song "Sadly Beautiful" that didn't get released on an album for another year and a half, and "Can't Hardly Wait" during which they apparently pulled up a female drummer from the audience to sit in (in what did NOT seem like a prepared stunt). This is the stuff of legend, ladies and gentlemen.

Anyway, this was the only time I ever saw this band. And I can't say that I ever got very into them -- I never bought a CD or downloaded a live show of theirs (though their Saturday Night Live performance is very enjoyable), or followed them too closely. I made a dub of the cassette for Brian (who wound up becoming an apartment-mate of mine 2 years later), and soon after a good High School friend Mike Gilligan (who is a HUGE fan of this band) borrowed my MASTER tape of this show. Frankly I can't imagine why I did this, as I NEVER lend out my master tapes to anyone. Subsequently, Mike and I lost touch for a long time. Also, the band broke up, and one of its members has since passed on. Apparently this is the 2nd lineup of the band, with a guitarist and drummer who were not in the original linuep.

Fast forward to July 2011 and the age of Facebook. Mike Gilligan manages to track me down by getting my info from my younger sister's Facebook account (as I am still not on Facebook). After hanging out once or twice, I started thinking to myself "I wonder if he still has my master tape?"...and before I get to bring it up and have the "awkward" conversation about where my master tape is, he mentions that "Awesome Replacements show" that he still has my tape of, but no way to play it -- and would love if I could find some way to get it on CD for him! And I mention that I've been thinking of getting my old cassette deck repaired or something so that I can do really high quality modern day 24 bit/96 khz audiophile transfers of my cassette masters. So the next time we meet, my master is returned to me twenty-something years later.

But this doesn't come anywhere near the end of my saga. First I try and get my very high quality circa-1989 Aiwa home cassette deck repaired. But the repair folks tell me it's going to cost more than $500 to repair. Then I start thinking -- well if it's going to cost me that much to repair, I might as well research what it would take to get myself the BEST cassette deck ever made -- well renowned to be the Nakamichi Dragon, last made around 1985, and the only cassette deck ever made which (not unlike a VCR when it entered "TRACKING" mode) would find the audio tracks on the cassette and set the azmiuth automatically for optimal playback. Now fast forward to November 2011 and after watching for months, I take the plunge on what seems to be a reasonably priced Dragon on EBay. Wow! It arrives, I hook it up. First tape I try to play -- it starts to chew up. Second tape I try to play -- chews it also!!! :( Now I send it to my trusted electronics repair guy -- the same guy who I have been sending my DAT machines to for repair since the mid-to-late 1990s. And he has it for months...and it drags on and on and on, and finally after bugging him on a weekly basis, he sends it back to me a year and 3 months later...and it's in the same condition it was in when I sent it to him. All the while, Mike Gilligan is still inquiring about the status of this recording/transfer on a semi-frequent basis too. :)

Finally I had to take the plunge and send the thing to the ONE place that is well known as THE place to repair your NAK Dragons. Everybody warns that it will cost an arm and a leg to fix. But after all of this time and headaches, I HAD to do it. Interestingly enough, Jen (my wife)'s Uncle Tom lives in the town in CT where the famous repair shop is for the Dragons, and since he drives into NYC on a frequent basis, he picked it up from me and gave my Dragon door-to-door service. Finally just a couple of weeks back, it came back to me, repaired to PRISTINE condition, and after testing it on a few scratch tapes, it proved to be working fine.

Anyway after all of this time, I've finally done the transfer and mastering (and this thing required a TON of mastering) mostly very heavy EQ to get it to sound good. The master was VERY thin sounding, being mostly midrange and high end, so I've added a lot of bass, and cut some frequencies around 2K to reduce some vocal harshness. At this point it is VERY VERY listenable (well, beyond the first 18 or so minutes when all I was hearing/recording was stage monitors), but at least you can now hear bass, drums, and some more fullness in the guitars and vocals where they were very thin before.

So, enjoy this 24(!) year old semi-rough, but IN YOUR FACE recording that I made when I was a wee lad of 18, of this now long-gone band.

Look for much better sounding recordings from my cassettes in the offing in the long run!!!

Enjoy!
