Unknown mics > reel (prob Akai 4000D) > cassette > Soundforge > FLAC

I was at Nottingham University in the 1970's and discovered that the people who ran the techical stuff (lights etc.) for concerts had set up a couple of mics over the stage, with cables running to a reel to reel recorder on the floor below. This was a very well kept secret, but I knew one of the guys responsible, and managed to persuade him to make me some cassette copies of a few shows I had particularly enjoyed. This had been going on for several years, but apart from my copies, I have never seen any other shows in circulation. I have lost contact with the people concerned, so have no idea as to what happened to the master reels. One of the highlights was Beefheart from 1973, though I was unable to obtain a copy of it. There is an audience recording in circulation, but it's not from the tech source. A copy of Wings first university performance is also around, but I'm not sure if it's this source either. If anyone has any info about the missing reels, I would be very interested to hear from them.

I don't have the exact date for this RTF show, other than it was 1974, probably November or December. It's a direct copy from the master reel, but either the original rec. level was low, or the level was low on the cassette deck, as there is a quite a bit of hiss. Also the 30 year old tape is beginning to show its age. There's also a big edit in Vulcan Worlds where the cassette was flipped and the ending of Celebration Suite is cut. Qualitywise it's between a soundboard and an audience recording of its time. Also missing is the encore 'Space Circus' which didn't fit on the cassette, and may, or may not be on the reel.

The band also had a great sense of humour, evidenced from the lengthy introductions here. But if you leave them off, the music will fit on one Cd.
