In the late summer of 1969, following the release of Truly Fine Citizen, Moby Grape's last album for Columbia, Jerry Miller and
Don Stevenson joined with John Barrett (bass) and John "Fuzzy" Oxendine (drums) to form The Rhythm Dukes.
Don Stevenson played guitar, rather than drums. The band came together at Jerry Miller's initiative, when Bob Mosley's joined the
Marines (only to be discharged 9 months later after being diagnosed as a paranoid schizophrenic). Don Stevenson left the Rhythm
Dukes and Bill Champlin replaced him on on organ, guitar and vocals.

The Rhythm Dukes shared the stage with such artists as Albert Collins, Lee Michaels, The Flying Burrito Brothers, Canned Heat,
The Grateful Dead and Cat Mother & the All Night Newsboys, generally being second-billed. They recorded a handful of tracks in 1970
in San Anselmo with the Son's engineer, Bruce "Junior" Walford (RIP) torquing the knobs. The tracks remained an often traded bootleg,
but is now sometimes available on the Internet, titled "Flashback." The Band broke up in 1971. Champlin continued with the Sons of Champlin,
Stevenson and Miller refounded Moby Grape, and John Oxendine played drums for the Moby Grape "Live" album in 1975. Bill Champlin
is currently on permnanet leave from the group "Chicago" and is touring with The Bill Champlin Band, and Jerry Miller is still gigging in the NorthWest.

This gig is at the Crow's Nest in Santa Cruz, California probably in 1970, although it is trades as 1992, which of course is completely wrong.
The Crows Nest serves sea food down stairs and rock and roll upstairs. This tape is, by my standards, a terrible recording, but if you
put it on in the background it grows on you, and you'll really get to know all the people around the taper, one of which had a friend who
was busted for drugs. But a tape of the Rhythm Dukes is as scarce as hens teeth.
