Rich Robinson

COMMON KNOWLEDGE ? HOPE SO...

Rich Robinson: Through a Crooked Sun
By Victor Valdivia

Every time The Black Crowes go on hiatus, we get to Rich and Chris doing solo ventures...
Now, on this Crowes's "hiatus," their guitar player and founding member has released a sophomore solo effort,
"Through a Crooked Sun", that opens up with a psych-folk-lazy blues vibe, through brighter melodies and tones
with reminiscent of the Crowes, and encompassing emotional levels that them, with all their weapons, are some-
times can't reaching.
The quieter Robinson brother's voice is softer that what you'd expect from his work with the Crowes. However,
his vocals are strong, melancholy and subtle, and works well for his songs that wear multiple musical cloaks.

Rich Robinson is no stranger to the solo album game; he issued his solo debut "Paper" in 2004, featuring Rich's
first real attempt at singing, that unfortunately received rather mixed reviews even amongst Crowes fans, who
were less than taken with Robinson's vocals and songwriting. His guitar skills have never been in dispute, but
the general consensus is that Robinson needed both a real singer and a forceful editor and collaborator-some-
thing—in other words, someone like Robinson's brother Chris, who serves that purpose in the Crowes.

It would be a shame if the bad taste from "Paper" overshadowed the possible reception of "Through a Crooked Sun",
though, because whatever its flaws, it easily demonstrates a quantum leap in Robinson's development as a solo
artist. His voice is not as expressive as his brother's—it bears a passing resemblance to that of the Chili
Peppers' Anthony Kiedis—but it shows a surprising dexterity. What's more, it fits the songs that Robinson has
written, which, on this album, are significantly more complex and layered. It's not a simple riff-fest, as solo
albums by guitar players sometimes tend to be. Here, Robinson has developed a writing style that is indeed
reminiscent of the Crowes but also encompasses levels of emotional intricacy that the Crowes, for all their
power, are sometimes incapable of reaching.

Consider the album's emotional centerpiece "Follow You Forever", a song inspired by Robinson's painful divorce,
it starts as a simple acoustic guitar and piano ballad but eventually grows, over nearly seven minutes, into a
lush instrumental epic with slide guitars, organs, and drums. What's significant is that this closing instrumental
segment feels completely organic and integral to the song, not forced or self-indulgent. Of course, it actually
takes a considerable amount of effort and planning to make something seem effortless, so Robinson deserves extra
credit for seamlessly crafting music that so perfectly captures the feelings of longing, disillusionment, and
heartbreak depicted in the lyrics.

It's worth pointing out that most of "Through a Crooked Sun" is as melancholy and subtle as that song. This is
not a hard-rock album, and only a handful of songs pack anything resembling the Crowes' fierce wallop. Clearly,
these are intensely personal songs that Robinson wrote to depict his emotional ordeal as honestly as possible.
It's why this is such a significant solo album—even at their most melodic, the Crowes are simply too brash and
energetic to ever be this delicate. By stepping out of the Crowes' comfort zone, Robinson proves that he's more
than a gifted instrumentalist. For instance, the album’s first single, "Hey Fear", is another melodic ballad,
although one that has more bite. Combining an irresistible hook with a country-folk arrangement that gives way
to some fiery guitar licks, it's a flawlessly realized composition in every respect, with the lyrics about
grappling with self-doubt in the face of adversity fitting the music. Even more audacious is "I Don't Hear the
Sound of You", which starts as a mellow country-folk ditty and then seamlessly switches over to a guitar and
vibes (that's right, vibes) jam that shouldn’t work yet somehow does.

Such boldness shows that "Through a Crooked Sun" is hard to dismiss as merely half a Black Crowes record.
Unfortunately, here Robinson has done himself a disservice by putting the two most Crowes-like songs as the
album openers. "Gone Away" sounds like a lesser rewrite of "Midnight from the Inside Out" from 2000's "Lions",
and "It's Not Easy" rehashes the lazy psychedelic boogie of 1994's Amorica. Robinson possibly wanted to collar
Crowes fans into giving his album a chance by enticing them with these soundalikes, but it’s an ill-considered
strategy, since there are much stronger and more distinctive songs that he could have used to open the record.
Similarly, his note-for-note cover of Fleetwood Mac's "Station Man" (originally on their 1970 album, "Kiln House")
isn't going to convince any doubters who dismiss all of Robinson's songs as mere '70s retreads. It may have
been an attempt to pay homage, but by adding nothing to the song, Robinson makes it a redundant addition to
an album that doesn't need more padding.

Nonetheless, despite these flaws, "Through a Crooked Sun" proves that Robinson is a solo artist worth taking
seriously. Like the best solo albums, it delivers something he couldn't have done with his day job. Moreover,
at its best, it's genuinely moving: a journey through depression and heartbreak that's painful but never morose.
Robinson's melodies and arrangements are so elegant and understated that they don’t so much bludgeon or overwhelm
you — instead, they gradually reveal themselves, making them all the more haunting. Some 20 years into his
professional career, Rich Robinson shows he's still got plenty of great music, and a few surprises, left in him.

Rich Robinson And Band im Kleinen Postbahnhof, Berlin

Gitarrist Rich Robinson gründete Mitte der 80er gemeinsam mit seinem Bruder Chris die Band The Black Crowes.
Inspiration holten sich die Jungs dabei von Bands wie The Allman Brothers Band und Led Zeppelin. Gleich mit
ihrem Debütalbum "Shake your moneymaker" gelang der Band ein weltweiter Erfolg. Nachdem sich The Black Crowes

Bluesrock vom Feinsten. Für die, die da waren, ein Genuß.

ABOUT THE VENUE OF THIS TORRENT:
(there's a short summary in English
down below, just before the setlist...)

Weltkrieg.

"The prodigy of my youth is broken
Leaving what’s left beneath the stars
To talk upon the days gone by
I see a world open up outside
To wallow in the willow of the blanket times
Like two young birds fall down from the sky

So bye bye baby
I’ll see you when this curtain falls down
So bye bye baby
When this scene turns around"

Rich Robinson "Bye Bye Baby"

..no wonder that Rich had Dream Syndicate
posters in his room when he was growing up...

RICH ROBINSON & Band (the name of the artist)

Ballsaal (the name of the big room)
Uebel & Gefährlich (the venue)
Hamburg (the city)
Germany (the country)

January 28, 2012 (the date)

Hamburg is the second-largest city in Germany and the seventh-largest city in the
European Union. The city is home to over 1.8 million people, while the Hamburg Metro-
politan Region (including parts of the neighbouring Federal States of Lower Saxony
and Schleswig-Holstein) has more than 4.3 million inhabitants. Situated on the river
Elbe, the port of Hamburg is the third-largest port in Europe (after Rotterdam and
Antwerp) and it is among the twenty largest in the world.

"Uebel & Gefährlich" (or with transliterated umlaut: "Uebel & Gefaehrlich") is an explicit
warning and means something like "digusting & dangerous" - the perfect name for a concert
venue in Hamburg, by survey of 'Rolling Stone' magazine "THE most announced club in Germany".
The name is, by far, surpassed by the physical appearance and historical significance of the
monstrous building: a former World War II surface air-raid shelter - Hamburgs Hochbunker IV,
built in 1942 as a so-called turret with flak towers and lots of anti-aircraft guns on top.
Even if you think that's hard to top, "Uebel & Gefährlich" is located since 2006 in 4 storeys'
height above ground, or in British English "4th floor", and "5th floor" for all them Americans...
And yes, they do have an outrageous staircase - not to mention the very special elevator/lift !

the notes:

² -> Rich’s second solo effort "Through A Crooked Sun" (2011) on Circle Music

³ -> "Llama Blues" (2011) Bonus EP given away with first copies of "Through a Crooked Sun"

€ -> a Fleetwood Mac song from their album "Kiln House" (1970), marking the band's
transition from the blues-drenched guitar stylings of founding member Peter Green to a
more broad-based musical approach, with the engaging songwriting skills of guitarists
Jeremy Spencer and Danny Kirwan as well as the tightly meshed ensemble sound that was
fast becoming the group's new trademark.

$ -> Rich aborts the song because of his guitartechnician's "false tuning" - IT'S LIFE, live...

§ -> composed by funk group "War" (Papa Dee Allen, Harold Brown, B.B. Dickerson, Lonnie Jordan,
Charles Miller, Lee Oskar, Howard E. Scott) from their third album "War", released April 1971,
their first following the departure of singer Eric Burdon and the group's name change from the
original: Eric Burdon and War. "War Drums" includes a chant of the band's name and appears to
be an attempt at a group theme song - lyrics: "We have the answer to all of your prayers..."

@ -> a songcover from "Procol Harum", the self-titled first album by British rock band
Procol Harum, released in September 1967. The album was named as one of Classic Rock
magazine's "50 Albums That Built Prog Rock".

% -> second song on the first side of "The Velvet Underground", third album by American rock
group The Velvet Underground. It was their first record to feature Doug Yule, John Cale's
replacement, recorded in 1968. This album's softer sound marks a radical shift in approach
in style from the group's previous recordings. In 2003, the album was ranked number 314 on
Rolling Stone's "The 500 Greatest Albums of All Time" list.

& -> song from Cream's double album "Wheels of Fire", a largely successful release, scoring
the band a #3 peak in the United Kingdom and a #1 in the United States, and became the world's
first platinum-selling double album. In 2003, the album was ranked number 203 on Rolling Stone
magazine's list of "The 500 Greatest Albums of All Time".

And if you like to spread the whole concert over 2 CDRs,
i'll recommend tracks #01 to #07 for the first CDR,
and #08 to #13 for the second one - nothing's lost @ this cut.

# -> "WULFF" NAILED THIS SHOW HERE...

so NO additional EQ'ing was used here, and none of those compressors, Sonic Maximizer
or other psychoacoustic processors - why ruin another true WULFF recording ?

it sounds completely the way it was distinguishable
that night in this venue...IF NOT WAY BETTER ;-)

I balanced just them stereo channels (the right one about +0,6 dB), deleted on the
first song the one channel with verbose crowd chatter - read WULFF's notes below -
and doubled the other, so de facto the first track is MONO. Furthermore some volume
fluctuations and other noises - appeared through the taper's moving from the soundboard
area to first row - had been repaired carefully. All other tracks are untouched...

The only further addition was a short fade-in at the beginning, and a fade-out
at the end, after the audience applause, so truly NO MUSIC was harmed or lost.

this upload here comes directly from the "Men With Microphones" archives.
if you want to know more about, check the old uploads...lotta stuff to read !

DE FACTO THIS IS FROM - WULFF - A TRULY PRICELESS MASTERPIECE...

some of wULFF'S notes:

"Came in time - interesting venue, beautiful Hamburch girlz. My first visit to
a "Bunker" or another WW II historic building aside of my hometown Nuremburg.
Started recording, as arranged, near the soundboard - just in time, BUT the first
track was HARMED by some extremely chatty people: DAMN, why do some people spent
30 or 40 bucks for a concert - and SPOIL other visitors with epic stories about
their latest bowel evacuations, erectile dysfunctions and/or mouthfuls of sputum ?
Spent about two minutes moving to the stage, facing Rich. Recording went well after
this incident, I'm sure Rich saw me checking the recorder a few times - he smiled.
sadly the concert lasted "just" about 90 minutes - DAMN FINE MUSIC, GREAT COVERS !
The H2n is easier to handle in concert than the "old" H2. As it's about the same
size, I'm also sure some girls noticed the big bulge in my trousers before the show..."

VERY SPECIAL THANKS, from the bottom of my heart, to my son Pythonmonty's
longtime friend CW, who moved last autumn from Franconia way north to study
@ university - and to learn more about life, women, beer & fine LIVE MUSIC !

BIG BIG THANKS TO RICH ROBINSON & BAND for touring Europe !

Big thanks to my whole family for supporting
and taking an active part in all my crazyness...

No animals were harmed in the making of this
recording or during the mastering and transfer.

And if there's some interest, maybe there is MORE TO COME...
it just depends on YOUR demeanor, and lotta useful comments ;-)

SOME Through a Crooked Sun ALBUM REVIEWS:

Outstanding
Honestly, I dont love every song, but the other 8 or 9 songs on this album I absolutely love.
Phenomenal album. I highly recommend to anyone who likes the Crowes, but more than that, anyone
who loves good music! Very good songwriting, and the cover Station Man is just awesome. I have
had the album since it came out a couple weeks ago and every time I get into my car its like
its brand new to me again. So dang good, nice work Mr. Robinson.
Keep it up! I'll be at your next show!

In verschiedenen Aufzügen.

David steht neben mir an
der Schalttafel. "Tschsch", Hand, Vorhang.

Durst gegen Vernunft. Da will ich mich auf keine Seite schlagen." Blondie

Das Empire State
Building in New York hinauf.

Bieratem, Parfümwolken, so viel Mensch.
eine akustische One-Woman-Show.

"Up And Down". Auf und ab. "Up And Down".
Immer wieder.
Song gecovert - und aus "Up And Down" "Abändern" gemacht.

Für diese Nacht jedenfalls habe ich genug vom "Up And Down". Ich will lieber abändern. Ich steige aus und
denke quer.
geistfeld. Auf einer Linie mit dem Horizont. Dahinter geht's bekanntlich weiter...
