Total Time ::: 58:25
::: Quality varies from very fine to EXC stereo FM but has brief annoying radio reception issues in various places. Check samples for trepidation alleviation or some thrills & giggles.
::: Warts: High end drops out slightly for several seconds in a few spots. Main reception issues and/or station drift as follows on: 4 (some, mostly 2nd half), 5 (erratic/brief), 6 (3 secs only), 7 (7 secs only), 8 (many problems including ~1 min deleted in middle), 9 (8+5+4 secs), 10 (8+4+10 secs).
::: NOTE : Taper had reception problems, seein' as how he was recordin' on the "wrong" side of the Pennines. Static problems scattered throughout (details below).
::: Overall a fine listen if you leave track 8 out, drift with the drift in a few places & pretend there are occasional ghosts in your stereo. Not to be missed.
::: 1980-11-23 was the concert date & first broadcast was 1981-01-01 on Radio Sheffield.
::: THIS IS NOT the same show as 1982-07-18 Crucible Theatre, South Yorkshire Folk Festival, Radio Sheffield (final Linda gig).
::: Thanks to DIMER srabbot for some research assistance.
Recording Information ::: Radio Sheffield FM delayed broadcast -> unknown recording equipment -> off-air master stereo tape (usually taper mastered on reels), Dolby off -> 1st generation Maxell XLII-90 cassette, Dolby on.
Playback 2013-05-05 ::: 1st generation Maxell XLII-90 cassette on Nakamichi 680ZX cassette deck, Dolby B on, azimuth & speed adjusted (pitched!) for individual recording, heads cleaned & demagnetized -> Sony Linear PCM Recorder PCM-M10 (LPCM 44.10kHz/16bit WAV files) -> computer -> Audacity (normalisation to remove DC offset, channel/phase alignment, fades, manual one-at-a-time glitch / dropout / bump / pop / click / dullspot repairs, volume adjustments, further speed fixes if necessary, NO equalisation) -> CD Wave (track splits) -> Trader's Little Helper -> yer ears. First uploaded week of 2013-05-25. I removed or reduced a thousand or more bits of static, one by one. Probably could have done more, but life's a too short. Also, certainly someone out there was no so drunk fron New Year's Eve & recorded on the "right" side of the Pennines & has a better master... I'm looking forward to it!
Line-up ::: Richard Thompson - acoustic & electric guitars, mandolin, vocals // Linda Thompson - acoustic guitar, vocals // Simon Nicol acoustic? & electric guitars, backing vocals // John Kirkpatrick - accordion // Sue Harris - keyboards, oboe, hammer dulcimer // Dave Mattacks - drums // Pete Zorn - electric bass.
Nothing here ever commercially released to my knowledge. If I'm wrong, please advise & I'll take the offending trax offline.
CoolSonics 243 ::: Thanks to the original taper & trader, Reel Master Gaule! ::: Corrections welcome ::: Knowing how much the taper loved this music, I can well imagine he was literally in tears over the reception issues. Luckily for DIMERs, the station drift is only to talking in the background (and it is rather minimal & infrequent), there's no commercially released music!
