'Texas Is One Song Away'
Everytime I hear Ricardo J. Dobson, i remember the TRUTH in this
(Rick Dinsmore cover-)song he had used as album-closer for his
"A RIVER WILL DO"-CD (Brambus Records 2003). Everytime WE hear
Richard sing, Texas IS truly just one song away - and this elder
statesman of genuine & real handmade music is not just another
SADLY UNDERRATED Texas singer/songwriter - he is DEFINITELY also
one of our "Desert Island"-musicians...'nuff said...

Richard Dobson & The State Of The Heart Band

I did a little tour with this fantastic band and had a lot of fun working and
drinking with them. You can easily hear that the audience had a lot of fun, too.
Digging up this old tape and listening to it brought back a lot of fine memories.
These days, Suzie Monick (who is maybe 5ft tall...) is still doing fine in Nashville,
playing music; I haven't heard of Mike Dunbar in a while (I hear he's still busy
playing the bass around Nashville) but had the pleasure of working with Richard Dobson
again a couple of weeks ago - watch out for another torrent...coming soon!

Richard is a companion of Guy Clarke, Steve Earle, Townes van Zandt and the whole
gang of early alt. country from Texas. Read about their early days adventures in
his highly recommended book 'The Gulf Coast Boys' ISBN 0-9665764-0-3.
(BELOW IS MORE TO READ)

Richard was btw the last REAL musician to ever
play a show live together with Townes (October 1996).

fearless frizz

PLEASE DO NOT FORGET to give a pointer to the really incredible work of Paul Rostetter.
Without his European label "Brambus Records" a lot of all these fantastic musicians and
bands NEVER would have been able to release their music and play concerts OVER HERE...

You §$%&! missed THIS HINT last time with this "5 Chinese Brothers"-upload...

deafmusic

As this recording is analog tape sourced, there are some clicks,
crackles, and tape hiss audible...believe me, never too distracting...
NO EQ'ing was used here, no noise reduction - and none of those
compressors, Sonic Maximizer or other psychoacoustic processors -
why ruin an "old" true deafmusic masterpiece ?

It sounds completely the way it was distinguishable that night in this venue.

My dad's buddy in DIME, real-O-mind (G2), usually writes:

Mettmann is a Rhenish town in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany, with
a population of around 40.000. It is the administrative centre of
the district of Mettmann, Germany's most densely populated rural
district. The town lies east of Düsseldorf and west of Wuppertal.
In the nearby Neanderthal, in the summer of 1856, quarry workers
discovered the fossilised remains of what became known as the
Neanderthal man or Homo neanderthalensis in Feldhof cave.

Parts of the "Deafmusic Collection" are also in the "MWM"-vaults, as we

recorded a bunch of shows together, as friends, music fans and concert

it just depends on YOUR demeanor, and lotta useful comments ;-)

"Dobson writes in the pithy, down-to-earth style that is at the heart of country music.
He traffics in down-and-outism and that spirit-whatever it may be - that gets people
through hard times and toughens them without numbing their sensitivity."

HOUSTON CHRONICLE, Dale Adamson

"An engaging songster out of the Townes Van Zandt-Guy Clark-Houston folkie mold, he paints.
Convincing word pictures of the Gulf Coast and the Southwest."

TEXAS MONTHLY, Joe Nick Patoski

"Dobson composes powerful lyrics that are straight from the
heart rather than coolly calculated or gimmicky."

THE TENNESSEAN, Robert K. Oermann

" I would guess that folks in the Southwest from Beaumont to Albuquerque
would like Richard's music. It's got that open Western Quality about it.
Rough and ready. Honest as the day is long."

THE NASHVILLE GAZETTE, Jim Rooney

" Richard Dobson, the talented singer-songwriter from Galveston, Texas, whose
songs include "Baby Ride Easy" which Carlene Carter and Dave Edmunds recorded
a couple of years ago, has moved to Nashville to make a serious stab at getting
into the music business on a full-time basis."

COUNTRY MUSIC PEOPLE (London/England), Richard Wooton

"Dobson is a Texas folk-rocker, a musical migrant, whose country beat covers
Chile as well as Nashville, nuclear war as well as family love."

THE SUNDAY TIMES (London/England), Simon Frith

"Richard Dobson is one of the very few writers to have the good sense to write
about solid things and concrete ideas. A stark intelligence runs through all his
work. I continue to be amazed at how really good-and aware-his songs are."

ROXY GORDON

"His moving, honest songs strike the same inner chords as the best works of
Jimmie Rodgers and Woodie Gutherie. His integrity and experience and the hard
won lessons of life run through his songs like water runs over the smooth
white rocks of a mountain stream."

JOHN LOMAX III

The Gulf Coast Boys (ISBN 0-9665764-0-3)

A novel by Richard Dobson

From the frozen Tetons of Wyoming to the Gulf of Mexico; from Austin to Nashville and points
between, the story of Rex Bell, Mickey White, and the legendary Townes Van Zandt - guitar
slinging outlaws on a quest of music and mayhem; a tale of hard traveling interspersed with
romance and high seas adventure.

released by "Greater Texas Publishing" and is available here: http://nativetexas.com/_dobson/

"Perhaps his most significant contribution to the canon, however, is his book the Gulf Coast Boys,
a rambling series of adventures that, among other things, provides invaluable documentation of
the 1970's heyday of Townes van Zandt."

No Depression (May/June 2000)

"Songwriter Richard Dobson's precious memories of his exciting years on the road and strange
adventures with a group of buddies and fellow musicians: Rex Bell, Mickey White and 'the looniest,
most gifted of the bunch, Townes Van Zandt'.
These anecdotes are told so vividly and in such detail (with lots of direct speech) that they can
be puzzled together into an autobiography of sorts despite the strong tendency towards episodes:
From Dobson's time working on an oil platform through the evacuation of the same in the midst of
a hurricane, survival strategies in Nashville and the potholes of the music business, up to the
slow drifting apart of the friends, touring in Europe, a few highs, many more lows, Townes' death.
True stories to be laughed at and suffered through. "It's a miracle we survived", a reflective
and sober Townes says to Richard Dobson before his death.
That miracle is what this book is about - no less."

Four-Stars review "Rolling Stone" German Edition, 10 October 1999 by Wolfgang Doebeling

Richard Dobson (born March 19, 1942) is an American singer/songwriter.

He was born in Tyler, Texas. He spent time in the 1970s with Townes Van Zandt, Mickey White,
Rex "Wrecks" Bell, Guy Clark, Steve Earle, Rodney Crowell and "Skinny" Dennis Sanchez.

Although his name is not prominent, his songs were recorded and/or co-written by famous artists
like David Allan Coe ("Piece of Wood and Steel"), Guy Clark ("Forever, for Always, for Certain";
"Old Friends"), Lacy J. Dalton ("Old Friends"), Nanci Griffith ("Ballad of Robin Winter-Smith")
and Kelly Willis ("Hole in My Heart"). His song "Baby Ride Easy" was recorded as a duet by
Carlene Carter and Dave Edmunds as well as by Billie Jo Spears and Del Reeves. It has also been
recorded by the Carter Family. For the tv show Christmas On The Road in Montreux in 1984 it was
performed by Johnny Cash and June Carter Cash. He wrote an autobiographic book about his years
with Townes Van Zandt and the others mentioned above, called The Gulf Coast Boys. Currently he
is working on a new book. He's also regularly writing a blog on Sharkforum.

From 2000 to 2005 he was living in Switzerland perennially, but returned to Texas in November 2005
to record an album in Nashville with Thomm Jutz, a friend and musician he played and recorded with
in Europe. The album titled On Thistledown Wind was released in 2006. The following album Back at
the Red Shack was recorded at the same studio in Houston, Texas where his first two albums were
recorded. For the recording of his album From a Distant Shore he returned to Thomm Jutz's studio
in Nashville again in 2008.

A native of Tyler, Texas, Richard Dobson is a true Texas treasure. A Bachelor of Science degree
in Spanish, two years in the Peace Corps, and living in a host of foreign places like Santa Fe,
New Mexico, Nashville, Tennessee, and now making his home in Switzerland, only strengthen the
deep-rooted Texas nature of this musical and literary icon. One of the most famous quotes about
Richard Dobson, (Ricardo, to his friends) came from Nanci Griffith, who remarked that Dobson was,
"...the Hemingway of country music." Ricardo lives up to that in a big way. With quite a few
acclaimed CDs to his credit, Dobson has been covered by David Allen Coe, Nanci Griffith, Guy Clark,
Lacy J. Dalton, and others. His offerings here include "GLOBAL VILLAGE GARAGE" (Salty Songs
Publishing, Nashville) which contains many of Dobson's great songs, poems, and a few stories.
Townes Van Zandt was a big Richard Dobson fan. You will be, too. Dobson is an accomplished author,
penning "The Gulf Coast Boys" and getting great reviews. There's just something about great writers
who have lived a full and wondrous life. They tend to let us tag along on the heels of their next
memory. For Texans, that's a glorious ride. We've been working on getting more Richard Dobson
titles for you, and here they are. The 2001 release "HUM OF THE WHEELS" is a twelve cut project
which includes 'Who Killed Jack Rabbit' and 'Coyote Waltz.' A baker's dozen are on the 2002 release
"Doppelgaenger" including 'Uncertain Texas,' a favorite of Dobson fans, and one that hits this reviewer
close to home, about 30 miles to be exact. 'Texas Is One Song Away' can be found on "A RIVER WILL DO,"
released in 2003. Dobson's 2006 release, "ON THISTLEDOWN WIND," is mostly new songs including
'Red Headed Woman' and 'Scissortail Bird,' two toe-tappers for sure.

Infos Susie Monick:

In the 1970's, Susie was founder & banjo player with the Buffalo Gals, 1st all-girl bluegass band
from Syracuse, NY. She moved to Nashville in 1976 with her jazz banjo album "Melting Pots". In the
80's she was an instrumentalist with the Vassar Clements Band. Adding mandolin & button accordion,
she played with Ginger Boatwright, Richard Dobson, Townes Van Zandt, Nanci Griffith, Josie Kuhn,
David Waddell, & Ceili Rain. She currently plays with the Panhandlers of Love & Farmer's Co-op!

Susie Monick is an extraordinary banjo player. Years ago, back in 1976 and 1977, Robinswing, the
band I was in at the time played at the Englishtown Music Hall with Buffalo Gals, the Bluegrass
fusion band Susie was in at the time. Geoff Berne, who ran the shows at the Eglishtown (NJ) Music
Hall combined the two bands for a couple of songs at one of the shows. The second show was a benefit
of sorts with a great number of bands, including Ricky Scaggs in his pre-commercial/famous phase.

Infos Mike Dunbar:

Hi, I'm Mike Dunbar. Steve Bivins and Ernie Bivens tagged me with the name Dr.Boom Boom because I
play the bass, electric and upright. I've been making music since the Doctor slapped me and I've
been playing the bass since R.D. Mowery hung one on me at Springwater in Nashville Tn. around 1980.

I've been blessed with the love of music since I was a kid. For years I worked at the Old Town School
of Folk Music in Chicago, teaching guitar, banjo, voice and music theory. Also in Chicago I played the
folk/acoustic nightclub scene. For the past 25 plus years, I've been living in Nashville Tn, where I
write and produce instrumentals, play upright and electric bass for country, americana and bluegrass
artists, and do session work. I'm also a moderator and mentor at JPFolks.com, a great music networking
website On the four songs here, I've played all the parts either acoustically or with midi keyboard and
sung any male vocals, some vocals are synthesized. You can find out a lot more about what I do on my
website. Also, if you get on my website, you can check out my singer/songwriter acoustic 2002 album.
This winter I'll be finishing another acoustic singer/songwriter album titled "Folklike." As a bass
player, I've backed up a lot of folks, including Johnny Cash, Willie Nelson, John Prine, Townes Van Zandt,
Leroy Van Dyke and Donna Fargo. Currently, I've been working with Razzy Bailey, George Clark and
Dixie Flyer, Dave Leatherman and Stone County, Bernadette, Sandi Kaye and New Hickory, and Will Clements.
Razzy's a great guy and good friend who's had 9 number one Billboard Country hits. George is a terrific
bluegrasser on the festival circuit who can also play piano like Jerry Lee. Dave Leatherman is a seasoned
bluegrass singer who has won SPGMA traditional bluegrass vocalist of the year. Bernadette, from Co. Donegal
Ireland, is an international star in both country music and Irish music. Sandi Kaye, husband Jim Frable
and sometimes daughter Cassie are New Hickory, Sandi sings bluegrass country and some rock as well as
doing tributes to Dolly, Loretta and Connie Smith. Her husband Jim Frable can play, probably, any instrument
well including piano, guitar, steel , banjo, and fiddle. Will Clements is a fine traditional country singer
and songwriter in Huntsville Alabama.

Music has been a blessing to me. It's given me a focus and a purpose. I thank God for it.
