Note (from taper): "I recorded this when RT was woodshedding the songs that Mitchell Froom would later, um, embellish (some might say 'wreck') for what became (the commercial release) 'Rumor and Sigh.' Here, though the songs largely settled in their arrangements, they'd never been played in Portland before. The motorcycle song was especially impressive - I never heard it the same way again. Nothing like the first time, right? The rest of the set pleases and teases: listen for the audience person who asks for (and gets) 'Al Bowlly's in Heaven' (not a stretch for RT but a nice touch for a paying customer) and dig the covers, too (that's me asking for 'Substitute,' which got laughs - but he did play it the next night in Seattle). A great night at the Melody Ballroom. We sat close to the front, and the audience was quiet. After hearing the files in Audition, I decided not to monkey with them. Have a listen. jp
