At 56, Rick was still a boy.
A boy who was genuinely
thrilled at the concept of email.
Who marveled at fax technology.
Who loved vanilla milkshakes
and Dunkin’ Donuts.

The world is a much better place
because of Rick Danko,
and a much sadder one without him.

Life hasn’t been the same since.

Remember our second Eric Andersen tour in Germany April 1999. There
sadly had been no concerts in the south because the Leo-family was
too busy, but we joined the caravan for a couple shows in the north.

Remember us all after the soundcheck for a Radio Bremen live concert
sitting in this excellent turkish restaurant near the venue "Moments"
in Bremen. All talking about the next step, next year, next century...
Eric as duo with Rick, or, preferred and even better, as TRIO with Jonas.

Remember this day in December when i got Wolfi's phonecall. Nobody was able
to call Eric. We forwarded our condolences via email...call us cowards...

REMEMBER THE LAST NIGHT OF 1999. The usual "Happy New Year"-phonecall to
Kløfta, northeast of Oslo, back in those days. And it was NOT a happy one...
First on the phone was Unni Askeland, his norwegian wife (back then...)
and mother of his four kids, a well known sculpturer, artist and painter.
Then came Eric...grown up men and women crying...lotta things changed...

THIS ONE HERE IS ESPECIALLY FOR Jaecksie S.
AND davmar77 & jamac -> briefly just 90 miles, my friends! ;-)

Big big thanks to my sisters & brothers in music (you know who you are...),
and all the true and devoted fans of Rick, Jonas and Eric...

Thanks for all the overwhelming comments concerning my latest Eric Andersen upload.

This recording here comes directly from the "Men With Microphones" archive.
"MWM" started in the 70ies in South Germany with analog recording equipment,
and at least two of them are still recording sometimes (since the 90ies on DAT,
and, lazy as we are, since lately with small, handheld WAV-recorders on SD-cards).
The "MWM" startet as a project of friends sharing their hobbies together. But by
reason of jobs, partners and other interests the circle of all involved shrinked.

B I O G R A P H I E S:

Eric Andersen was one of the first of the Greenwich Village folksingers of the
early Sixties to write his own material, which includes the much-covered
“Violets of Dawn” and “Thirsty Boots.” With more than 20 albums to his credit
(including Memory of the Future and the unexpectedly blues-influenced
You Can’t Relive the Past, both on Appleseed), Andersen’s skills as a singer
and songwriter continue to evolve.

Rick Danko first reached the world as a member of The Hawks, the Canadian backing
group for Ronnie Hawkins that became Bob Dylan’s controversial “electric” band
before establishing their own identity as The Band. Danko remained a recording
and touring member of the group long after their ostensible “Last Waltz” farewell
to the road and also maintained an intermittent solo career before his death in 1999.

Jonas Fjeld, described by Danko as “a Norwegian national treasure,” is in fact a
household name in Scandinavia. As leader of the Jonas Fjeld Band, he won Norway’s
Spellemans Pris in 1985 and ’86 for “Best Rock Album of the Year” before moving to
Nashville for several years. His song “Perfect Strangers” was a hit for Anne Murray.
Jonas, a friend of Eric Andersen’s since 1980, eventually returned to Norway as a
solo artist and has been awarded several gold albums for his sales there.

DANKO, FJELD, ANDERSEN

Danko/Fjeld/Andersen was the first of two albums featuring the multi-national
folk trio of Rick Danko (Canada), Jonas Fjeld (Norway) and Eric Andersen (United States).
A melting pot of folk, rock, country and blues, it is an intimate portrait of
musicians simply doing what they do best.
from: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Danko/Fjeld/Andersen_(album)

When Eric Andersen, one of folk’s preeminent singer-songwriters, Rick Danko, the Band bassist
with the heartbreaking voice, and Jonas Fjeld, the renowned Norwegian performer and songwriter,
played an impromptu gig in Woodstock, N.Y., in the fall of 1990, there was “magic in the air,”
according to Andersen. Recognizing this unique synergy, the trio quickly played a 10-date
Norwegian tour in February 1991, then headed into an Oslo studio to catch their collaboration
on tape. The resultant, self-titled CD went on to win the prestigious Spellemans Pris (Norway’s
version of the Grammy) in 1992. The following year, Danko/Fjeld/Andersen (issued by Ryko in
the U.S.) was awarded the NAIRD (now AFIM) “Indie Award” as 1993’s Best Adult Contemporary album.

Along with the prizes came high praise for the CD. Rolling Stone called the record “soul music
of deep and lasting appeal,” England’s Folk Roots wrote that the trio “makes a timeless sound:
real mountain music. Their voices blend like a Baptist choir or a New Orleans barroom band.”
And Bob Dylan named the release “one of my favorite albums of all time.” As the late music critic
Robert Palmer wrote in the CD’s liner notes (reprinted in One More Shot), the three singers,
songwriters and frequent solo artists “forged their disparate backgrounds and experiences into
a shared voice…[reaching] out to us with one voice, and a depth of feeling that seems to well
up from one heart.” Rick Danko, a member of the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame as part of The Band
and now also deceased, summarized the combination: “It doesn’t matter where we come from
geographically. We talk the same language.”

On Danko/Fjeld/Andersen, now reissued in remastered form as the first half of One More Shot,
all three artists trade lead vocal and harmony duties and songwriting credits on twelve tracks
that often showcase a mood of gentle reflection and melancholy, as befits their achingly
expressive voices and deeply felt songs. One particular highlight, exemplifying the project’s
generosity of spirit, is Rick Danko’s exquisitely mournful reading of Andersen’s classic
“Blue River,” a song Andersen says was partially inspired by meeting The Band during 1970’s
Festival Express train tour of Canada that featured the Grateful Dead, Janis Joplin and a
riotous cast of other groups and musicians.

As rock critic Robert Palmer points out in the album's liner notes, this is no conventional
collaboration. "These three friends and musical soul-mates have forged their disparate
backgrounds into a shared vision. Like the best bands, they reach out to us with one voice,
and with a depth of feeling that seems to well up from the heart."

Although Robert Palmer concludes his liner notes with the hope that “we can expect more of
that essence rare,” the trio was to record only one more CD, 1994’s Ridin’ on the Blinds,
before drifting apart. One More Shot is a historic addition to the trio’s slim discography,
returning their debut to a new generation of listeners and treating longtime fans to a
souvenir of three mighty talents on stage.

Common knowledge so far, i hope.

Preliminary words:

Last October i uploaded an Eric Andersen show from
Auditorium Roen, Bolzano, Italy, October 24, 1995.

And this wednesday i uploaded another Eric Andersen show from
The Jabberwocky Folk Club, Syracuse, NY, September 15, 1972.

In both descriptions you can read how we became booking agents, organizer, promoters,
road managers and 'chief cook & bottle washer' of Eric's first ever german tour in 1997.

Around the middle of the tour we had our first Bavarian concert at 'Art Cafe Maritim'
in the city of Roding, which is located near the district capital of Cham, county Upper
Palatinate, amidst the Bavarian Forest, near the border to the Czech Republic...

And during soundcheck this guy came in, Eric stopped all the sudden, and they hugged
like crazy. Afterwards he introduced his friend to us as his biggest Italian fan,
policeofficer Jaecksie S. from the Modena region. Jaecksie heard about this tour, took
immediately a vacation and his car...couple hours and some 750 kilometer later he
arrived in time for the nearest and southernmost concert, from his point of view.

After the show he wanted to leave, back to Italy. But as both other upcoming
bavarian gigs took place in the Nuremburg region near our home, we invited
him to stay at our place for a few days, enjoy hanging out with us & Eric and
visiting two more concerts...

A few weeks later we got this parcel as a thank-you, including,
in his opinion, some of the rarest italian Eric Andersen-shows.

THIS ONE HERE IS ONE OF THE CASSETTES...

About this concert:

Ever heard about the "Only A Hobo" Festival ?

Ever heard about the "Flying Carlinis",
Maria Grazia, Paola, Ray and Carlo Carlini ?

Owner of "Only A Hobo" Music Promotion ?
ITALY BOOKING AGENCY:
Only a Hobo - Carlo Carlini
via Fondo Toce 16
CASTELETTO TICINO, 28053

Carlo deserves a statue for bringing to Italy, every week, some of the greatest artists
from the americana, folk, rock and blues scenes today. He lives and organises most of
the shows in a town called Sesto Calende, but due to the numerous artists from the
Tex-Mex area that play there, the place should be re-named "Siesta Caliente"...
(from Lorenzo "Gogo" Bertocchini's page...http://www.skylink.it/gogo/)

Please check out the giant list of musicians who've played there:

http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendID=84357857

And in early 90ies he started this "Only A Hobo"-Music Festival, with, in 1994,
among others: Danko, Fjeld and Andersen, Joe Ely and Townes Van Zandt...

Here is a cover by marastha, including a fine pic of Paolo, Eric, Townes & Joe...

http://www.steveearle.net/us/townes/tvz_19941202_onlyahobofestival_booklet.jpg

Sadly we lost contact to the Carlinis a few years ago after
we stopped promoting concerts (and losing money...lol),
and their website

http://www.onlyahobo.it

seems dead for quite some time...

Maybe somebody can shed some light on all these facts and circumstances...
Maybe there is an upgrade out there ? Or other concerts from Carlo's castle ?

Never found a copy of this soundboard in a list, so far.

Even 'The Band' Tape Archive with performances by Rick Danko
is showing just the audience recording:

Eric himself got a 1st generation tape from the soundboard-master,
so the copy he made for his friend Jaecksie is a 2nd generation,
and i transferred it very carefully to DAT: my Nakamichi with
playback head azimuth aligned to Tascam, completely unaltered...

So there is some slight tape noise, but who cares ?

More frustrating for us is the missing of the complete second encore song,
and most parts of the first song after the tape flip, Robbie's "Twilight" :-(
Eric confirmed that this is exactly what he got back then...

but crying doesn't help at all, so please

ENJOY THIS ONE HERE....
absolutely unaltered...
and UNTRADED...to my knowledge, so far
