Rick Wakeman : The Lostbrook Tape Series - Volume 38
I wasn’t going to release this due to quality issues, but
it’s my first tape and a piece of Lost Brook history for
those who care about such things. Unfortunately, there are
more questions than answers about this recording, beginning
with “Why this concert, and why not any of the other two
dozen shows I had seen in 1974/75?” Had I recently acquired
a tape deck? Was this even the Sanyo? The Sanyo didn’t normally
distort at this distance from the stage. Were speakers mounted
in the rear orchestra? Was this a friend’s tape deck? Why did
I record only 65 minutes of a 90-minute tape? Why did I use the
pause button so many times? Was this a test? Was I only trying
to record certain songs? What did I think about the results? Was
I happy with them, or so disappointed that I went out and bought
the Sanyo? All of these answers are lost to the fog of history,
including perhaps the most important one of all: Does anyone really
need a triple-neck guitar? Regardless, this is a “journey” to synthesizer
heaven, to a “knight” long ago, an evening with Rick Wakeman and his
glittering cape surrounded by keyboards. It was a time when nothing
was too grandiose or pompous. We would have enjoyed it even if Wakeman
had added choreographed ice dancing to the performance – as if that could
really happen.
