Taper notes:
I present a very rare and deep treasure from my archives for BARN141 -- a recording that has almost never been heard since I recorded it: a Rickie Lee Jones solo performance from Town Hall here in NYC.

Fans, rejoice! There are not a ton of Rickie Lee recordings circulating. The rest of you may ask "Rickie Lee...who?" about this recording. Well, let me fill you in a bit....Rickie Lee is a female singer/songwriter who was touted as "The Next Joni Mitchell" (much the same way male singer/songwriters are touted as "The Next Bob Dylan") back when she came to prominence in the late 1970s. She is definitely an acquired taste, as her singing style tends to be in a slurred/boozy cadance, she writes incredibly intelligent poetic lyrics in a style much more akin to Tom Waits than Joni Mitchell. Historically you may best know her from her hit "Chuck E's In Love" which was HUGE for her, from her song "Easy Money" which was first a hit for Lowell George on his post Little Feat solo album, or her duet with Doctor John on "Makin' Whoopie" which was also a pretty big hit. In the intervening years she has released excellent album after excellent album of originals and startling covers (often working with Donald Fagan and/or Walter Becker from Steely Dan on some of the production), even releasing a trip-hop influenced CD ("Ghostyhead") in the late 90s. Like fine wine, she's definitely an acquired taste -- she's definitely not for everyone.

As far as I can tell Rickie has never allowed taping, and I attened this show at the super uptight (and notriously ANTI-TAPING) Town Hall (I believe this was my first time at the venue) with good music buddy from the time Michael Stentz and his girlfriend (at the time) Conni. We were amazingly seated in the front row, and I had the Sony stereo mic I was using at the time hidden in a painters' cap that I had poked a hole into the front of for purposes of mounting the mic. Being in the front row actually helped in this case, since it was a solo acoustic show, and of course the NYC crowd was very boisterous. Luckily all of the boisterosity was BEHIND us so didn't pick up much on the mics. The hat setup wasn't great, and the mic came loose a couple of times and you can hear me fixing it ontop of my head a few times.

Really the biggest problem with this recording was the very very quiet solo acoustic music (guitar / piano) that was coming off the stage versus the nearby loud clappers. This is the reason that this recording sat on my hard drive waiting to be worked on for 15 months (I originally transferred it in Feb 2011). Inspired by the amount of work I did mastering a similar (current) recording of Guster and bolstered by some new clap-scrubbing techiniques I've picked up in Sound Forge, I finally decided to let this baby see the light of day.

Onto the show itself -- it's a nice overview of the highlights of Rickie's career -- her best tune ("Weasel And The White Boys Cool") is featured early on, as is her biggest hit ("Chuck E's In Love"), and she digs deep into most of her catalog for the amazing and more well known songs "It Must Be Love", "We Belong Together", "Coolsville", "Flying Cowboys". She also tosses a couple of new tunes out there including "Altar Boy" (which might contain the only explicit mention of a "boner" I've ever heard in a song!), plays an excellently re-imagined Bowie cover of "Rebel, Rebel" and really hits her stride with "Last Chance Texaco", a real treat. If you make it that far, she finishes the show with an a capella tune.

Rickie released a live album from this tour called "Naked Songs", but that was not sourced from this particular show (and featured Rob Wasserman on bass for some tracks) and the running order is somewhat different and is missing about 30 minutes of this set's material.

If you're inspired to check out more of what she does after hearing this, I'd start with her self-titled debut, her 2nd album "Pirates", an 80s release "Flying Cowboys", and an amazing amazing album of all covers from 2000 that everyone should own called "It's Like This". She continues to release vital music currently, 30+ years into her career.

I put a lot of effort into polishing this gem to the best of my ability and I'm really happy with the result. I hope you will be too!

Enjoy!
