This is the earliest known recording of The Phantoms playing live; the band's
first big Halloween show and was broadcast by WTUL, New Orleans. The historic
importance of this show is pretty high despite the somewhat rough performance.
Now for the technical notes. This does seem to be the master cassette of a
radio broadcast. However, this tape is in very bad condition and has alot of ailments.
The tape had been chewed up in previous cassette decks and is loaded with
dropouts. The output level on the tape is also quite low. These things have
been corrected as much as it was feasable. The worst problem was that it was impossible
to get the azumith (tape head alignment to the tape) correct for 100 percent
of the recording since the tape was so beat up. The last song for this show is
the Rolling Stones' "Sympathy for The Devil" which was so damaged that the tape
nearly reached the breaking point and the track is absolutely unlistenable.
All that said, the show now sounds decent, though incomplete. The original broadcast
was not mixed well either and the guitar is too loud. Be warned, this one
may not be for you if you are looking for a Phantoms show that will not leave
your Cd player. You may only listen to this one a few times and file it away.
Hopefully, some collectors will find this one worthwhile.
