Another Jackal Production Vol 29: Robby Krieger 2024-10-23 Whisky a Go Go, West Hollywood, CA

I live in Northern California and had been contemplating flying down to LA to catch one of the late October David Gilmour shows that would be his only West Coast appearances for his current tour. I had been sitting on that thought for a few weeks when, somehow, I found out Robby was going to be playing The Whisky just two days before Dave would be playing at the Intuit Dome. I'd been wanting to see Robby for years but as far as I know he hadn't played in NorCal for over 20 years. Seeing Robby, then seeing Dave two days later? Hell yeah, I knew I was all-in!! I checked with my buddy & once he made some arrangements to cover for his granddaughter's kindergarten-pickup-duty, he was all-in too. And then whaddya know... a week before the shows during Thursday Night Football they announced that the next TNF game would be the Vikings at the Rams. Being a Niners fan I may be rooting for both teams to lose, but what a great way to fill the day between the shows. Hot damn... it's turned into a junket!

Man, what a night!! Robby played for 3 hours & 20 minutes and never left the stage except for the encore break. He outlasted his son Waylon who, in true Doors lead singer fashion, sat out for several songs mid-show after having apparently over-imbibed. Dan the bass player and two guest vocalists filled in for an extended period and Waylon returned for the final hour. It was an enthusiastic and boisterous crowd on the tightly packed SRO floor. I mitigated the worst of the closeby disturbances but the recording definitely retains The Whisky's atmosphere. The only real distraction I couldn't eliminate was a guy who forced his way through the packed floor a couple times (during songs) to take shots up to the band. Toward the end of the marathon the crowd was noticeably worn out and needed a little encouragement. But we rallied and were rewarded with still more music. When it was all over at a few minutes before 1am, Dan said it was the longest set they ever played. I don't know if that was really the case but during Soul Kitchen I started thinking we might be staying at The Whisky all night!
