Notes: I had never been to this venue before and, I've got to say, it was a most unpleasant experience. For starters, they couldn't get the crowd in before show time - we arrived 45 minutes before start time and were just getting in the door when the opener started (from what I heard, she was great, but unfortunately, I had no chance to record). Further, the seat numbering was confusing; we had to engage an usher as there was only one seat available where we had two, which resulted in the ENTIRE ROW having to move down one chair. Most frustratingly, to find an usher required my wife and I both to leave the seat area and track someone down.
The sound itself was loud - I was at Queensryche last week, on the floor near the stage and my ears were ringing much worse after this show, sitting in the mezzanine, one level up. We did, however, have a good sight line, dead center, so, once the show started, Robert and band were mesmerizing. It is interesting to me, having just seen Plant with Alison Krauss last year, that this tour seems to be a variation on that theme, though they're playing a completely different set of songs. I'm not familiar with Suzi Dian, but she fills a similar role as Alison Krauss, singing harmony vocals (with an occasional lead) and playing quite a bit of accordian. The music presented is largely (though, not completely) acoustic, rootsy through an ambient filter, with soft yet passionate singing.
That's not to say it couldn't rock. There were plenty of opportunities for the players to let loose. Robert has got his nuance down and is singing spectacularly, holding notes that would make singers half his 77 years jealous and if his shirt isn't popping open anymore, he's still got a Percy move or two left. It's not Zeppelin, but that's not the point - he revisits the catalog on his own terms, bringing the spirit, if not the sound, of the originals. We've seen Plant six times going back to 1988 and every show has been unique. That's one of the reasons we keep going back.
I've included 10 photos taken from our seats - they ain't art, but they give you an idea of the stage set-up and how the show looked from where we sat.
Finally: please don't sell the recording, but, otherwise, do with it what you wish. Share it and trade it, and remember: these and other greats will not be around forever, so, let's enjoy them while we have them. Best wishes to all of the fans out there and Namaste.
