Robert Plant & the Sensational Space Shifters
Civic Hall, Wolverhampton, UK
2nd September 2013
Up to this point, I was still to be convinced about Robert's current incarnation. I attended their opening show in Gloucester last year. It didn't then know what
it was, nor was it evident what it wanted to be and came across as possibly a temporary stop-gap until something better transpired.
In recent times it'd become apparent that the Band had become something more serious, and from listening to shows shared by the Good Folk who frequent this site
it was clear that this "sideshow" had become something more significant. They'd benefitted from months on the road together, and both the playing and setlist
had developed enormously over the intervening period. Wolverhampton would be a much different kettle of fish to that which was served up when I'd last
encountered them.
That said, I wasn't prepared for how good they were in the flesh. A unique experience, and whilst they morph from folk, to roots, to blues, to spacey psychedelia,
interspersed with elements of "world" music, it all hangs together beautifully well; a rich, spicy cauldron of familiar ingredients served up in an excitingly new
way...the musical equivalent of hitting the hyperspace button - a huge trip from start to finish.
Am I still overly full of the afterglow from last night's encounter? Possibly, but judging by all the smiling faces witnessed as we made our way out there was more
than enough evidence to suggest that this had been a bloody good show.
Robert and the Band appeared very relaxed and happy, playing extremely well. Great audience too...well, with the possible exception of one Numpty who, shortly
after the show having started, seemed to think it was OK to push his way through the crowd to get nearer the front (you'll hear some altercation at the start of S,YKMCD).
When the reality hit home that he was about as welcome as a fart in a space suit, he retreated from the confrontation which arose at every turn he made.
One of the best shows I've seen by anyone in a long time. Super atmosphere. It'd be great to think this Band might record something and go back out on the
road again...
The Civic Hall in Wolverhampton's a bit of a featureless brick and concrete affair.
Holds just over 3,000 at capacity. Balcony around three sides, all standing downstairs.
Looked and felt pretty much at capacity.

Still a couple of opportunities left to see this Marvel in the UK over the coming months.
You'll be glad you made the effort to get to The Albert Hall, Manchester Apollo...or both.
