Review:
Robert Plant at the Fillmore Auditorium in Denver
By Mike Long | October 6th, 2014

Former Led Zeppelin vocalist and lyricist, Robert Plant, refuses to cater to fans who only want more of the same.
Its a rarity among performers from the classic rock era. Since his first solo album in 1982, hes explored
Middle Eastern, African, Celtic, Americana, and, at least, several rock genres as vehicles for songs that have
challenged long-time fans to expand their musical frames of reference.

Released a month ago, Plants 10th solo album, the exceptionally well-received, Lullaby and The Ceaseless Roar
is his first studio record with the Sensational Space Shifters, his current band. All that said, its a safe bet
that many of the aged 45 and older crowd at the Fillmore Auditorium on Oct. 4 werent waiting in the line that
stretched three blocks long, an hour before the show, to hear much of that.

Preceded onstage by the sounds of Link Wrays Rumble, the show opened with a trippy, psyched-up version of
No Quarter from Led Zeppelins Houses of the Holy. The set featured plenty of re-imagined takes of songs
from Led Zep albums (What Is And Should Never Be, Ramble On, Going To California,
Babe, Im Gonna Leave You), scattered between new and old (In The Mood) solo material and a few great covers.

Always a talker onstage, Plant seemed genuinely happy to be playing in Colorado; even revealing he spent time
calculating how many days some number over 16,000 it has been since he first ever sang in Denver. Also,
like every other act that plays Colorado anymore, he mentioned noticing a peculiar smell wafting from the crowd.
No need to ask Does anyone remember laughter? when people are high on legal cannabis. They either JUST laughed
a minute ago or, like me, dont remember all sorts of things when theyre high.

Plant, ever the showman, still pulled off a few of his now iconic rock god poses that he freely admits he
lifted from Elvis. At 66 years old, he didnt attempt the higher registers he once shrieked, but, beyond a
doubt, he still has quite the instrument for a voice.

The Sensational Space Shifters, solid throughout the roughly 90 minute set, feature Justin Adams (on guitars
among other string instruments and backing vocals), Juldeh Camara (on ritti, an African fiddle and backing vocals),
Lim Skin Tyson (on guitar, banjo, backing vocals), John Battott (on keyboards, backing vocals),
Billy Fuller (on bass) and Dave Smith (on drums).

There were a few well-timed, trance-friendly, near-transcendental instrumental breaks, aided by Plant on
percussion, that absolutely elevated the show from just a Robert Plant sings the hits show. No, it wasnt
Led Zeppelin, it wasnt intended to be. In 2014, it all sounded so much fresher.

Robert Plant And The Sensational Shape Shifters Shake The Foundations Of Denvers Fillmore Auditorium
Andrew Metzger October 8, 2014 in Concert News

DENVER, CO Watching Robert Plant perform with his band, The Sensational Shape Shifters, this past Saturday
at the Fillmore Auditorium in Denver was an experience boarding on the spiritual/life-changing spectrum.
My words cannot adequately describe the atmosphere and excitement of that night, however, I can tell you now
as I write this review that my heart is still thumping from disbelief and joy from seeing one of rocknrolls
greatest vocalists ever.

Before I continue, I should make note that the Last Internationale, who opened for Plant and his band, held
down their set-list, but honestly, their set was dwarfed due to the over anticipation of seeing Robert Plant.
Everyone was excited; from teens to seniors we were there for one ultimate reason: Robert Plant, Led Zeppelins
frontman. But ultimately here, my point being that the Last Internationale are a good match for Plants
Sensational Shape Shifters, as they bring a fresh tone and energy to the indie-rock genre.
The Last Internationale will be a band to follow and watch develop for sure...But...

Back to the reason why I was there, and why 95% of the audience was there: Plant, Robert. As soon as Plant came
on stage the place was under his spell. Opening with Zeppelins No Quarter, everyone was instantly thrown
into their own flashback, their own fond memories of when they were first introduced to Plants mesmerizing
vocals and lyrics. Their set list consisted of roughly 30% Zeppelin tunes, with the rest being a mixture of
the Shape Shifters old and new material. The band recently released their latest studio album lullaby
and The Ceaseless Roar, which was obviously promoted too, and quite successfully, as I have been recommending
it to all rock fans.

Sadly, at this point all I can really recommend is YouTube recordings for live Plant performances, and/or
buying a Sensational Shape Shifters CD, as their brief North American tour is concluding October 7th at
Californias Hollywood Palladium. So for a few lucky souls, they still have the opportunity to see this
touring extravaganza, and for a few lucky souls, they already have.

Looking beyond the fact that Robert Plant performed (amazingly) a few Zeppelin songs, the rest of the
Shape Shifters set was also entertaining and enjoyable from a music enthusiasts point of view. The name,
Shape Shifters is appropriate as the band can seamlessly transition from a Zeppelin jam to a bluegrass
infused folk-acid-rock jam to a full fledged classic rock vibe. Also, during their finale, the Shape Shifters
pulled out some heavy, psychedelic rock-dance jams, with Plants vocals assisting in the final face-melting segment.

In conclusion, Robert Plant and the Sensational Shape Shifters are great and completely worth seeing live,
especially if one is a Zeppelin fan. If not, I wonder why you read this far as the writing here is not half
as interesting as Robert Plant.
