boombox's notes april 2015:

Opening the show was 28 year old Midlands blues guitarist Joanne Shaw Taylor. With vocals reminiscent of Janis Joplin and guitar channelling the spirit of Steve Ray Vaughan, Paul Kossoff and Gary Moore, Ms Taylor doesn't do the big stage act like Larry Miller (who's also rather good!). Instead, she just lets the music do the talking and boy, did it wail!! Ably supported by a strong rhythm section, she threatened to blow the lid off the place and her standing ovation was truly deserved. I, for one, will be checking her out again (and again and again, I think).

Robin Trower came out after a lengthy interval and just got right down to it. He may have lost his locks, but he hasn't lost any of the power and lyricism of his guitar playing. Again supported by just bass and drums, he treated us to a good mixture of old and new songs. Vocalist Richard Watts should also be singled out for praise, tackling the older songs with aplomb, while playing bass - an instrument that Robin only asked him to take up for this tour!! My only criticism is that it was over all too soon - around 80 minutes, including the encore, was a little disappointing, especially when Robin has such a back catalogue.

The recording of both sets came out pretty well - no real talkers nearby and only a couple of loud clappers. Have used a bit of volume reduction on individual claps and some hard limiting to improve the inter-song experience. Also applied a smidgeon of compression on Robin's set to balance out some peaks in the first couple of songs. As always, my 24-bit master files are available to anyone who wants them for a remastering/matrix project.

Play this one loud and enjoy!
