Tale of the Tapes and the Tandberg

With Jareds passing in October 2016, the complete JEMS Archive was moved south from his home up north. That move, sad impetus aside, presented an opportunity, however daunting, to go through and organize the collection. With the help of some amazing friends and experts (among them Slowburn, SS, RD and slipkid68), JEMS tapes are now accessible in ways they have never been before. Stan, the S in JEMS, was also on hand to help and fill in our taping history as he always does.

When the task was done and loaded into the truck, one box in particular captured my attention: master reels recorded by Stan on his Tandberg portable reel to reel. Weve posted some 25 or more of these on DIME over the years, but there were several that had yet to be transferred, and still more that Jared had transferred in the last five years but had seemingly never circulated or uploaded.

If you dont know about the Tandberg, it was a remarkable piece of gear in its day, not only capable of recording at 3-3/4 and 7-1/2 IPS, but in full-track mono. I wont do the math, but compared to a cassette, the surface area of tape capturing the music is orders of magnitude higher, which is why so many of Stans Tandberg masters from the likes of David Bowie, Elton John, Led Zeppelin and Bruce Springsteen are considered by some as audience-recording classics. The Tandberg required 10(!) D-cel batteries to operate, is roughly the size of a compact typewriter and weighs more than ten pounds. Imagine sneaking that into a show and your respect for what Stan accomplished only grows.

This is the ninth in a series of Tandberg master reels digitized for the first time. Happily, the original Tandberg deck is still fully functioning, so these transfers offer full-track mono playback on the original tape recorder to maximize quality.

Huge thanks to SG for another amazing Tandberg recording, to Jared for taking the time and care to transfer the master tape, and to Frogster for stepping up to take this one over the finish line.

BK for JEMS

If you think we were done with the Tandberg Mono Masters, it's time to think it twice!

Every time I talk with the JEMS team about what we could do next, they always (and I mean, ALWAYS) come with something that exceeds my expectations. This time, I bring to all of you with a great joy, this uncirculated master recording of Rod Stewart on his first solo tour of the United States.

As many of you (Stewart collectors out there) know, there's always been a huge gap in the recordings of the early solo career and it's time to change that. This recording is not only uncirculated and from his first US solo tour, it is an EXCELLENT capture of a GREAT F-ING SHOW with tons of energy.

For the casual fans that remember Stewart for his later, more pop-oriented and radio friendly career, I guess you will be surprised with this hard rock version of him (and with good reason, as he's performing with another living legend, Carmine Appice of the Vanilla Fudge and BBA fame).

As for the recording, it's really clean and consistent, the sound is up-front and you can discern each and every one of the instruments. Compared to another recordings of this era, this is a must to have in every sense of the expression.

The JEMS Archives are vast and we're just scratching the surface. There a lot of other recordings waiting for proper transfer/upload and we'll always work for liberate them for your enjoyment.

Please do not hesitate any time to contact the JEMS team if you have any old tapes that you recorded or collected and you're waiting for them to be transferred.

REMEMBER: What you may consider to be a "B show", could be the holy grail of another person!

Huge thanks to Stan for another amazing Tandberg recording, to Jared for taking the time and care to transfer the master tape, and to BK for providing me with the digital master file to work with.
