DimeTravel 234 ::: Thanks to the original taper, "The Man In The Palace"! ::: Corrections welcome ::: Whatever recording or editing was done for the BBC Top Gear session was at Maida Vale Studio 4 on 1968-03-13 & first broadcast 1968-03-17. However, probably a good part of the actual recordings were done prior to March 13th, as they seem to have been done during the "Come Out Fighting Ghengis Smith" album sessions. Ken Garner's "In Session Tonight" lists 4 songs for this session, "In A Beautiful Rambling Mess", "Night Fighter Song Writer", "All You Need Is" & "Life Goes By". Of the 3 songs I have from this session, only "All You Need Is" is a completely unreleased alternate take. "In A Beautiful Rambling Mess" has a completely different vocal take to the album version but the instrumentation seems mostly identical. It's an alternate album take unless Harper took an instrumental recording to the BBC Studios & cut a new vocal track. While that was done for later Top Of The Pops shows (and presumably others), it seems unlikely at this point for Top Gear. "Night Fighter" was intended to be the B-side of a 45 which never happened (presumably recorded during the "Ghenghis" sessions). It was finally released a few years ago on the excellent "Today Is Yesterday" CD collection of early studio trax, tho' the version played on the BBC has some double-tracked vocals, and possibly other mixing differences. Harper may have remixed the track for CD. Peel announces the title as "Night Fighter Song Writer", tho' later Harper apparently changed it to just "Night Fighter". "In Session Tonight" lists a 4th session cut, "Life Goes By". That song was Roy's 3rd single, first recorded in '67 & issued as a '68 CBS 45 A-side (& is also on "Today Is Yesterday"). The Top Gear version will likely turn out to be an alternate BBC recording, when & if it shows up (very likely a number of people already have it in their archives). Harper's first BBC session from 1967 & numerous 70s sessions have yet to surface in common trading circles. If you have other sessions not on the commercially released CD's, please get in touch, I'd love to hear them. For now, settle in for a good listen to an alternate take of "All You Need Is". As Peel says, "I couldn't agree more"... Listen, enjoy, show appreciation, share, give, spread peace. Yrs truly, Knees
