MISC NOTES:
My first time seeing Rufus. This was a General Admission show. He was touring in support of his album, "Vibrate: The Best of Rufus Wainwright," which essentially made the show a "Best of" show. I decided to buy a ticket and attend and I'm glad I did! I am pretty happy with the tape too. There was a giggly fellow sitting to my left who occasionally chats with his friend between songs, but for the most part, a few "woo's" aside, everyone was pretty respectful which the performer was playing.

Show was opened with about a half dozen songs performed by Rufus's sister, Lucy Wainwright Roche, whom I also recorded.

In editing the show I ran Soundforge's "Click and Crackle Removal" tool, but was left with plenty of applause. I undertook the four-hour task of manually applying a "v" shaped envelope to each individual offensive hand-clap in between songs in order to cut down some of the unpleasantly loud claps. I also applied custom envelopes to each post-song roaring-applause, which fade away sharply in a shape which matches the rise in volume, and fade back again softly, so as to minimize or remove any potential for sounding odd or manipulated. I think it came out pretty well!

Only other technical note I'll make is that there is a slight snap sound as the volume shift slightly during track two at about 2:42. The preamp I was using is still fairly new to me, and at this moment I decided to increase the level of gain from +35 to its max, +40. Unknown to me at the time was the fact that switching the gain settings results in a small stutter in the signal. I tried to match the volumes in post, but I have come to find that matching that 5dB difference is not as simple as applying a 5dB boost to one part of the recording. Indeed I believe that the difference in those settings is likely about 7dB. Further, the gain-change also left a, extremely short (0.034sec) hole in the signal, which I decided to remove all-together. The lesson here is if you're going to change gain settings, wait until there is no noise at all other than applause.
