Technical Notes:
I obtained a cassette dub of this show approximately 10 years ago from a trader living in the Capital District (Albany, NY area). I have no idea of the original lineage, but it may be as low as 2nd generation. I would welcome anyone to post a better copy of this show if they have one. If you're a purist, don't bother downloading this show. It's a good recording, but hardly one of the better ones I've heard from the GRACE UNDER PRESSURE tour. Still, I have never seen this show on STG or Dimeadozen.org, so I figured I'd post it for anyone who wanted it.
For the cassette to WAV mastering, I made only a few adjustments. The pitch of the tape was definitely TOO fast, so this was reduced by 1.18 using Pitch Shift in Sound Forge. I used a guitar in standard tuning as a pitch reference for this adjustment. (Other sources I've seen listed on the Internet appear to have been mastered at the wrong speed, based on their running times) I normalized each tape side to about 99%. I made no other cuts and have left the original cuts made by the taper. For instance, the recorder was cut off after "Subdivisions" for some reason. There are also tape flips after "Between The Wheels" and "Red Lenses". I did NOT fade in "Red Barchetta". This edit was present in the tape I received. Musically, this appears to be the complete show (based on comparisons with other set lists from the GRACE UNDER PRESSURE tour).
The EQ of this recording lacks bass and could probably benefit from some careful equalization. I decided to leave the EQ as it was and made no other adjustments other than the ones mentioned above. Again, if you have a better source, PLEASE POST IT.
Performance Notes:
I'll let other Rush fans critique the actual performance and stay brief in my comments about the show. I do remember Alex Lifeson goofing up a few licks during the show, but can’t recall exactly where. No real surprises in the set list. During the first U.S. tour, Rush had been playing “Afterimage”, but replaced it with “Kid Gloves” for the 2nd leg (which is played here). Solidly played otherwise!
Personal Notes:
My main reason in wanting this particular show was because I had been in attendance. This was my very first Rush concert (of many). I was about 15 years old at the time and had not yet begun taping shows at this point. I remember watching much of this show from the very top of the right side bleachers, right near the entrance to the arena. I don't think we had great seats and had chosen to watch the show from a different vantage point. My memories of that evening 23 years ago are quite hazy due to the large quantities we had smoked that evening. All I can really remember now is being mesmerized by the laser show. :) This was an early lesson for me on why it was often better to be SOBER for those events in life you'd want to recall later (or at least not completely smashed!) Therefore, I was grateful to find a recording of this hazy concert moment to relive with greater clarity.
Although I might not remember this show with any true clarity today, here are some excerpts from my journal entry for that day. I wish I still had the discipline to keep a journal, for they do come in handy for moments like these. I thought this might add a nice personal touch to these notes! Ah, to be a teenager again....
September 15th (Saturday)
Got up and called everyone about the concert, in order to get in together. Adam was to pick us up at 5:15 P.M. and Linda would come over around 4 P.M.
Phil and I just hung around the house all day because the weather was crummy. We listened to albums and cleaned up his kitchen. [Ah, the dangerous kitchen! Phil probably wouldn't be happy with me if I went into extreme graphic detail here, but let's just say that he had a remarkably dirty kitchen. Doing the dishes could be an all day affair at his homestead. What was cool is that he had speakers placed in the ceiling, so we could listen to killer tunes while we ate grits and other sorts of "munchie food".] Eventually, I had a few beers and ended up getting a little drunk.
When Linda came at 4 P.M., we showed her the house. She was her moody self. We had to call James to find out if he could replace Tyler [Adam's friend] at the Rush concert. Since he couldn't, we ended up taking Hans, a friend of Linda's.
We all got to Glens Falls Civic Center at 6:30 P.M., courtesy of Adam's mother, and we hung around and got our stuff together. Adam bought a program and a tour shirt. We found a spot at the top of the bleachers, because our seats weren't any good.
We got high as soon as Fastway came on. They did a lot of their new material, plus great versions of "Easy Livin'", "Say What You Will", "Feel Me, Touch Me" and "Far, Far From Home". It was better than last years performance. [I saw Fastway open for Iron Maiden at Glens Falls Civic Center in May of 1983. Dave King, the band's vocalist, was really the stand out performer in the band.]
But the real show happened when Rush hit the stage to "The Spirit Of Radio". Lasers, explosions and video screens were all part of their great show. They did "Distant Early Warning", "Red Sector A", "The Enemy Within", "Between The Wheels", "Kid Gloves", "Red Lenses", "The Body Electric", "Subdivisions", "New World Man", "The Weapon", "Tom Sawyer", "YYZ", "Red Barchetta", "Vital Signs", "Witch Hunt", "Closer To The Heart", "Temples Of Syrinx" and "Finding My Way". The last song I didn't recognize. Rush was excellent!
Later, Phil related the story of how Adam wanted us to "rush the stage"! We all found that pretty funny, since we were a LONG way from the stage at the top of the bleachers!
