man, did i have high hopes for this show

and man, did it not disappoint...

sideman (though that term doesn't begin to do him justice) to pretty much every one of ryley's influences at some point - tim buckley, bert jansch, john renbourn, john martyn - danny thompson is some fifty years senior to his onstage cohort

but if that age gap may have suggested any kind of disconnect, those worries are instantly dispelled

danny thompson pretty much always looks delighted on stage - but he looks positively beatific with joy all night tonight

that list of singularly transcendent guitar players above is also a roll call of the dead

and the opportunities to lock his double bass magic with anyone approaching their telepathic abilities must come few and far between these days

but tonight is one of those nights

as it transpires, danny doesn't make it all the way through the tour

he has to miss leeds and a second london show after his health takes a serious enough knock in liverpool to put him in hospital

(where he apparently remains - though in good spirits, judging by his twitter feed)

so those of us who get to experience this spectacular pairing are fortunate indeed

sorry if you didn't get a chance to experience it too

but hope this makes up for it at least to some degree
