major upgrade to previously circulating source
downsampled and dithered to 16 bit 44.1 khz CD ready files

SOURCE & TRANSFER: unknown generation cassette tape (possibly / probably master tape) > Nakamichi BX-2 (dolby off, normal bias, azimuth adjusted) > line out Radio Shack heavy duty gold plated rca to 3.5mm stereo > Zoom H2 line in @ 24 bit 96 khz > Wavelab 5.01b (track splitting on full second marks no fractions no SBE's) > 24/96 split master clone wav files > Trader's Little Helper > 24 bit 96 khz split master clone FLAC8 > Foobar2000 (tagging)

Small patch during incomplete "Solsbury Hill" from older previously circulating source. Upsampled and remastered, Speed and pitch matched to new source via Wavelab 5.10b, digital azimuth adjustment via iZotope RX Advanced 2.

RECORDING NOTES:
Excellent audience recording. Recording missed part(s) of "Solsbury Hill" due to tape flip. Upon close examination and comparison, this is NOT the version that was released on Sarah's single for Steaming. The officially released track appears to be from another performance than this (partial) one. There are several differences between the two performances of the song. It was previously omitted from the old circulating version in error.

There is a promotional 12 inch single with 2 live tracks (Solsbury Hill and Steaming), and it correctly lists them both to be from the 18th of April only, not the 17th show.

The "Steaming" CD single incorrectly lists "Solsbury Hill" to be recorded on April 17-18, 1989. It was only taken from the April 18, 1989 concert.

I have also been in contact with some of the musicians who are featured on the recording, who confirm that this audience recording is not from the same show as the officially released live track that was taken from the next night, and listed on the "Steaming" CD single as being from both nights somehow. It is not from both nights, and should always have been included with the rest of the show. It should not have been previously removed to appease certain music torrent sharing sites...

I love the P.A. "malfunction" in the first acapella song. Hope they fired the soundman! Hahaha! Oops!

This version of this recording comes liberated from the Steve C. collection of cassettes. These may be master tapes but I am not certain. It is a big sound upgrade to the previously circulating version of this show. I believe there were two nights at The Town Pump in Vancouver. I only have this first night's show from this cassette collection - as the story went, there were 3 boxes of tapes, one was lost, or irretrievable. When I had access to the 2 remaining boxes and got to organizing them a bit and make some transfers, they were still in a semi random order, so I believe that there are (were) other tapes that got completely lost to the dumpster gods in the third box that "went missing"...

This is a raw cassette tape transfer with no processing at all. There is a certain level of tape noise and hiss to contend with, but there's a lot of detail and air mixed into that wash of noise that just isn't there in the old version(s). I left in some raw tape flip pre and post blank tape sound - in some cases you can hear me press play in the leader tape at the very start of a cassette side. You get 5 seconds of unrecordable leader tape, a few seconds of blank tape , and then I almost thing I hear another layer of tape noise before I hear the recording click on... Could these in fact be 1st generation tapes and not masters??? I do not know, as I cannot find Steve C. to ask him if he taped this or what they were recorded with...

There is a mystery that leads me to finally believe that Steve C. might not be the taper of this show, or, the tapes I got to access were safety copies and not masters. I am not sure. There was a segment of "Solsbury Hill" that existed in the privately traded but Dime omitted partial version of the song that was not on Steve's tape that I transferred, and a large part of the song existed only on Steve's tape and was missing from the previously traded version. I've included a cleaned up upsampled version of the extra short segment that bridges some more of the tape flip gap in this upgrade. The song is nearly complete with all the parts re-assembled, but it's strange that the intro and the beginning was missing from the old copy (but Steve had it), and a small part of the middle near the end was missing from Steve's tape (but the previous copy had it)... Strange indeed, like both of these tapes were copied incomplete from another longer master source... ??? Hmmm.... maybe.... ???

I threw together some coverart for this release of this show. I'm including the artwork that was made for the originally circulating version of this show that was sourced from a multi-generational tape trade copy transfer. I would welcome some more updated HiRes artwork if anyone wanted to make some! Thanks in advance if you can email me copies of your coverart for this show. Cheers!
