The latest Shonen Knife lineup (Naoko, Ritsuko, and Emi) visit Brooklyn in support of their new "Osaka Ramones" all-covers album. First set is Shonen Knife classics (including a couple of old Michie-penned songs, "I Am A Cat" and "Devil House," here sung by Emi and Ritsuko, respectively), then the band changes into short leather jackets for an encore of Ramones songs - halfway through which they're joined by C.J. Ramone, who plays bass and sings three songs with them before getting a group hug from the band and departing. It is, like all things Shonen Knife, simultaneously brilliant and adorable.
I've recorded four Shonen Knife shows now, and this is the first one that I can really say I'm happy with - the mix is decent and the vocals are clear. Recorded from slightly left of center, about 15 feet from the stage, almost in line with the left speaker. Since this made for a louder left channel, I mixed a small bit of the left channel in with the right to balance things out.
Buy all Shonen Knife's records, and see them when they come to your town. Not for their sake - for yours.
