Sid Griffin (LONG RYDERS) & Pat McGarvey (COAL PORTERS, WESTERN ELECTRIC) - October 22, 1997 - LGB Zwischennutz, Nuremberg, Germany
** Audience DAT-master, MWM 0096 **
>> SIMPLY AMAZING - ! A MUST HAVE ! - UNTRADED & UNCIRCULATED << with samples
This upload is for the one-and-only "Kentuckian With Many Friends (plus one turtle)" and his family,
and especially for a certain "dclubok" (thanks, my friend !)...
plus all the uploaders ("singsing" & "cragtopper"), friends and supporters of Sid...
This recording here comes directly from the "Men With Microphones" archive.
"MWM" started in the 70ies in South Germany with analog recording equipment,
and at least two of them are still recording sometimes (since the 90ies on DAT,
and, lazy as we are, since lately with small, handheld WAV-recorders on SD-cards).
The "MWM" startet as a project of friends sharing their hobbies together. But by
reason of jobs, partners and other interests the circle of all involved shrinked.
SID GRIFFIN displays many chapeaux in his career as a multi-faceted musician, proud
author, knowledgeable broadcaster and professional golfer. Okay, only the first three
hats get anywhere near his noggin but they all fit snugly and look quite smart.
He is also a proud parent whose weekly column on Kids Say The Darndest Things was once
read throughout Southeast Asia, and a guy who makes excellent banana walnut pancakes.
An eighth generation native Kentuckian who currently resides in England, the name Griffin
has popped up in literary circles due to the success of his Million Dollar Bash book on
Bob Dylan's Basement Tapes, due to his bluegrass band the Coal Porters enjoying success
after success with their new CD Turn The Water On, Boy! (and due to Dick Smith tearin'
it up on banjo!) and to his many media appearances, be they via ink or the airwaves.
In 2005 NBC's The Jimmy Kimmel Show had their house band play Sid's song Jimmy Reed as
they went to commercial...our hero was watching that eve and fell off the sofa when he
heard the familar melody struck up. In addition to falling off furniture Griffin has
already won a Lifetime Achievement Award in Italy (true!), and last October Sid's
old band the Long Ryders, the legendary founders of alt-country, released via Prima
Records Ltd. a new CD entitiled Live 2004: State Of Our Reunion and 2008 will witness
a live DVD release from the same tour. Further to all this Sid activity begins a book
on Dylan's Rolling Thunder Review years and he starts a new album later on in 2008.
Currently involved in writing a new radio script about the late great Buddy Holly, the
radio proves Mr. Griffin's friend as his recent stint as Resident Musicologist on BBC
Radio Two DJ Mark Radcliffe's excellent late night show raised his profile and brought
the Griffin Insight to an entirely new demographic. Frequently heard on late night BBC
Radio, Griffin's silver-toned vocal chords were heard extensively when the BBC broadcast
Mark Lamarr's four part series Redneck Music in early 2008. (Griffin was not the Redneck
in question, no.)
As a musician Griffin continues to perform on bluegrass mandolin with his acoustic
Coal Porters ensemble who are playing many festivals in summer 2008 including Glastonbury.
He looks forward to summer 2010 with the hope his old rock band The Long Ryders will perform
once again. Having at long last completed the editing of the DVD release of the Live 2004:
State Of Our Reunion concert, Americana fans will be pleased to note two Extras on this
upcoming DVD of the Long Ryders performing live in 1985 in Manchester (filmed by a fan who
had one of the very first mini-cams).
http://www.sidgriffin.com/pages/more_sid.htm (THANKS, SID !)
In addition to all this he is still playing the occasional solo acoustic show and is doing
a series of MILLION DOLLAR BASH readings/lectures/performances so these are busy times indeed
for the artist referred to by BBC Radio One as "a rock'n'roll Renaissance man" and by
Ireland's Hot Press as "The Great Enthusiast".
Sid Griffin, Long Ryders and Coal Porters music is available via Prima Records CDs or your
favorite MP3 download site such as iTunes and eMusic.
In addition to those tasks Sid Griffin was Resident Musicologist on Mark Radcliffe's excellent
BBC Radio Two show, consultant and interviewee on the Mark Lamarr's recent BBC Radio series
Redneck Music as well as becoming known more and more as a record producer.
Sid is also a freelance journalist having written for The Guardian, Mojo, Q, BAM, The Los Angeles
Times, Country Music International, Ruta 66, Music Week and a host of other publications. As a
rock'n'roll archivist he has overseen reissue projects for the Everly Bros., Long John Baldry,
Dolly Parton, Arthur Lee, Nils Lofgren, his friend the late Gene Clark, Michael Nesmith, the
Flying Burrito Bros., Gram Parsons, Phil Ochs, his old band the Long Ryders, Joe Ely, Steve Young
and his dear sweet pal the late, great Ronnie Lane, amongst others, while participating in the
reissue of many other albums.
And yes, Sid was a DJ on Mean Country Radio 1035AM before it was sold, hosting a very popular
Thursday night bluegrass show and a Saturday afternoon C&W honky tonk show.
He cooks a mean rissotto. He can juggle too. Really.
Yet it is for his activities as a musician and songwriter that Griffin is best known. Having
founded and named the Long Ryders back in 1982 Griffin was their ringleader during their long
hard ride, a ride which ended a little over six years later after numerous tours, appearances
on national TV, magazine covers and seemingly endless interviews. He wrote and sang the band's
biggest single, "Looking For Lewis And Clark" and still gets requests for Long Ryders material
every time he takes the stage. Rumor has it he and fellow Long Ryder Tom Stevens will tour Spain
late in 2008 together...watch this space!
When the Long Ryders disbanded Sid relocated from Los Angeles to London, taking the name
of his new band with him: the Coal Porters. Based in London since February 1992 the
Coal Porters started out as a Long Ryders Mk. II but are now an all acoustic five piece
playing uptempo folk and bluegrass.
In addition he started Western Electric, the alt-country band to beat all alt-country bands.
Their debut album in the year 2000 was Mojo magazine's Americana Album Of The Month and led
them to some exhausting touring in the USA and Europe. Best described as "Portishead meet Wilco"
Western Electric is the world's first Country & Eastern band, crossing straight C&W with
psychedelia to great effect.
His work as a record producer has led him to produce tracks for Lindisfarne, Eric Burdon,
the Flying Hendersons, France's indie heros Les Bayrues and young alt-country diva Esther Mae.
His production of the 1998 Lindisfarne studio album, "Here Comes The Neighborhood", helped
give the classic Geordie band what many consider their best release yet.
And during all this Griffin has been performing as a solo acoustic troubadour, at first in
support of his well-received 1997 release "Little Victories" and lately in support of his
latest solo CD "As Certain As Sunrise". This long awaited album is readily found in the shops,
can be downloaded easily from many sources and will then reside in your heart forever.
If it seems like a full schedule that's because Sid Griffin has a full life. This is a man
whose best Geordie friend says "Sid Griffin isn't happy unless he is doing five things at once".
Griffin is always involved in one project or another be it a new album, a tour, research for
a CD reissue or working with the BBC on a TV documentary such as the recent collaboration
with Gandulf Hennig on Gram Parsons: Fallen Angel.
He lives in north London with his daughter Esther Mae Griffin, his rare guitar collection,
a cracked Ming vase and a parrot named Juan Marichal. He has never met Linda Evangelista,
Heidi Klum or Marisa Miller but thirty years ago he shared a beer with Jack Klugman. True.

About this concert:
One of our alltime greatest CD's, a record for both, making love and taking it with you
to the well known desert island (just to listen it there and make love again...lol),
was the 1997 release of our friends Sid Griffin, the longplayer "LITTLE VICTORIES".
This wass Sid's long awaited first solo album. A largely acoustic country-folk affair,
the core band of the recording features Sid with legendary guitarist Wes McGhee with
contributions from the other Coal Porters and his wife (back then) Kate St John.
Special guests include Billy Bragg, who duets with Sid on a previously unreleased
Phil Ochs song, "Sailors And Soldiers", and Steve Wynn who co-wrote and duets with
Sid on "The Rate Of Exchange". To promote this album, Mr. Griffin did some heavy touring ...
During an European Tour in October 1997, sharing the bill together with Bob Neuwirth,
our hero "Sid The Sqid" played a few rare solo/duo shows together with his partner in
crime, bass player, song co-author, friend and "Coal Porters" bandmember Pat McGarvey.
And sometimes with other famous, wellknown, mostly German musicians...on stage always
impersonated by the very same and absolutely fantastic & funny Mr. Hair Gel Pat...
And on extremely rare occasions Sid allows one of his guitars to be played by a gifted
hobby-musician, carefully handpicked out of the small but overwhelming audience for
some really mind-blowing and absolutely unforgettable twin lead guitar solos !
THIS CONCERT HERE IS ONE OF THOSE FEW AND FAR BETWEEN MOMENTS.
=============================================
ANOTHER GIG OUT OF MY PERSONAL TOP TEN EVER, ONE
OF THOSE YOU'LL TAKE WITH YOU ON A DESERT ISLAND.
SID IS EXTREMELY TALKATIVE, AMUSING AND FUNNY,
CONGENIAL SUPPORTED BY HIS FRIEND AND PARTNER,
WITH SONGS SPANNING HIS WHOLE CAREER, A COUPLE
COLLABORATIONS WITH HIS OLD FRIENDS, AND A FEW
CAREFULLY SELECTED COVERSONGS - IMPERCEPTIBLE !
And the whole event was carefully carved on DAT by me...
No animals were harmed in the making of this
recording or during the mastering and transfer.
It's untraded and unaltered so far - please enjoy !
Leo Lonetaper's opinion about this torrent:
"Sid and Pat in top form performing an inconceivably outstanding show !"
Let's argue the pros and cons of this statement above:
The whole tour was messed up completely...
Sid in quite a bad shape as his throat was sore.
It was one of the last concerts in this lousy venue.
More rats and roaches in it than real human beings.
The same night was a extremely important soccer game.
Nobody is able to remember the result or even who played...
Less than a dozen paying visitors in the audience.
We came in a foursome and payed for almost everything (?).
The usual bad ratio between male and female audience.
Although i came alone with my wife and two of our girl friends...
Not enough alcohol and absolutely NO groupies.
My wife was off topic, so were both our girl friends ;-)
Just one taper in the audience (with permission, promised !).
Sadly NO correct working soundboard patch was available...
Hence a Tascam & a Sony DAT recorder outside in our car, open rioting.
There was no money left to pay decent hotel rooms for the artists.
Sid and Pat had the ultimate chance to sleep on the club's floor.
This was kind of a last show, as they had a few days off afterwards.
If you ever have the chance meeting Sid
or Pat, or both, in such a situation...
INVITE THEM !
FOR A DAY...
BETTER FOR A WEEK...
OR A MONTH...
OR SIMPLY ADOPT THEM (like we did...).
Both are vegetarians and extremely easy to handle.
And i can tell you we had an incredible time, all
together (to be true, one of a few times...).
They just needed a bed (to be correct: two), coffee and beer,
laundry facilities plus dryer, and casual tender loving care...
Pat is truly intangible funny and has this broad accent
nobody south of the capitol city of London is able to
understand roughly without using an articulation dicker...
or the help of an expert lip-reading person or dactylogist,
especially when we talked our own broad franconian dialect.
And Sid is a lexicon, a living dictionary or walking encyclopedia.
He knows nearly everything concerning musicians & music industry,
and his stories are amusing with extremely good entertainment value.
Hi owns this fine, sometimes extremely black sense of humour, a true
mixture originated from Kentucky and blended with some Monty Python...
And if you ever have the chance to see Sid
or Pat, or both, or the Coal Porters, Western Union
or the Long Ryders performing live in concert...
SLAUGHTER YOUR STOCKS,
SELL YOUR HOUSE,
TAKE YOUR CAR,
GRAB YOUR LOVER...
AND GO THERE !!!
SEE THEM !!!
WATCH THEM !!!
TALK TO THEM....
AND RECORD THEIR SHOW !!!
AGAIN:
BUY ALL AVAILABLE MERCHANDISE STUFF...
AND RECORD THEIR SHOW !!!
