Notes: I obtained this CDR in a trade circa 2002, immediately noticed that it was not tracked and was overmodulated for at least part of it, and flagged it for repair at a later date. Over twenty-two years later, I've finally gotten around to making the fixes - I was hoping that this would show up either on another tradelist or via torrent, but I've never seen this show again. This one appears to be pretty rare and comes toward the end of their brief Far East reunion tour in 1993.
My interest in S&G goes back to high school in the 1980s - I very much styled myself as a hippie and dressed appropriately, from my long (now long gone) hair to my moccasin boots, with the occasional dashiki or paisley for good measure. Fortunately, I learned to dress better, but my love of 1960s music has never waned - for me, listening to this recording isn't just a time machine to 1970, but to my teenage self. All five Simon & Garfunkel albums were part of my regular rotation and, while I don't listen to them as frequently today, I still love those songs. It's amazing to think that both men are well into their 80s now.
To be frank, this is not a great recording. It is pretty muffled, recorded in a large venue with what sounds to be a crappy tape recorder and external microphone, and who knows how many generations from the source. The first 1/3 of the show was very overmodulated, so I slightly adjusted the normalization in Audacity. Setlist.FM shows that they played a song called "Black Slacks", but that is not here and I did not note a gap where it would be, so I'm thinking that is incorrect. Additionally, they show the date played as December 4, but a brief blurb I found on the interwebs indicates it took place on Sunday, December 5, 1993 - which is the date I was told when I received it in a trade, so I'm going with that. According to that same blurb, this was originally scheduled for Hong Kong, but the venue was too big and Paul feared that Art would completely blow out his voice, as he was already struggling following the USA dates. All that said, there is quite a bit of chat from the stage and a couple of unusual songs in the setlist, including a late appearing Hearts And Bones, one of my favorite Paul Simon songs, so, to me, this is worth a grab if you're a fan. It's a pretty short show, but all indications seem to be that this is complete.
Finally: please don't sell the recording, but, otherwise, do with it what you wish. Share it and trade it, and remember: these and other greats will not be around forever, so, let's enjoy them while we have them. Best wishes to all of the fans out there and Namaste.
