Tapers Notes: This is a tape from a very late Sir Doug tour. They were billed as the Sir Douglas Quintet, even though there are songs from every facet of Doug Sahms career. In the band are Doug, Augie, Rocky Morales on sax, Luis Ortego was the bass player, and on drums was Doug Clifford from CCR. The tape is very undercirculated. I did give a copy to Brian Henneman of the Bottle Rockets, but this is a different/better transfer. What makes up these discs is everything off the 2 hour Maxell cassette. Side 1 was all I got from the first set, side 2 was all I got of the second. The titles of the sets describe what was going on at the time. During the first set I discovered I had locked my keys in the car and had to wait for AAA to come and get them out. I left my recorder w/ friends and they just let it roll while sitting on the table. The second set, we have moved closer to the band, but we are celebrating getting my keys out of the car for free. So you will be able to hear a bit of drinking, along with the audible lunacy that can accompany getting three sheets to the wind. There is a fair amount of the crowd hooting and hollering. If you need recordings where the audience is only a rumor, this aint for you. The sound is good, not great. A low fidelity recording. This was done with very basic equipment. I started out taping in a stealth manner, but locking my keys in the first set resulted in the deck just being placed in the open, and so a clearer recording. By the second set we were closer, and were so drunk we just left the deck on the table for all the world to see. At one point Doug looked down and saw the deck running. He didnt seem to care. If this type of recoding was of a band that is well represented in live material, I probably wouldnt post it. However, you dont see much Sir Doug from any era, so I put this out as a Christmas treat. I remember Henneman being excited I had a show from 92. He said there wasnt much of that tour around. If you are a Doug fan I dont think you will be disappointed. This show was a party.
