Aula KHG, Mettmann, Germany
** SOUNDBOARD DAT-master, MWM 0148 **
>> SOLO & WITH A FANTASTIC BAND - another sadly underrated artist - AMAZING QUALITY - UNCIRCULATED << with samples

Preliminary remark 1:

This is for my friends in Texas and elsewhere (you know who you are...)

Preliminary remark 2:

Part ONE of "The Travelling Troubadours Revue 1997" gig in Mettmann.

More informations are available here, when the Carrie Newcomer
and Ray Wylie Hubbard parts of this very special night are upped...

Preliminary remark 2:

As far as I know NONE of this recording was ever used commercially ;-)

This upload here comes directly from the "Men With Microphones" archives.
"MWM" started in the 70ies in South Germany with analog recording equipment,
and at least two of them are still recording sometimes (since the 90ies on DAT,
and, lazy as we are, since lately with small, handheld WAV-recorders on SD-cards).
The "MWM" startet as a project of friends sharing their hobbies together. But by
reason of jobs, partners and other interests the circle of all involved shrinked.

At seven lines and a tight 19 words, the definitive
Slaid Cleaves bio — written with humble but poetic
economy by the artist himself — neatly sums up
everything you really need to know about the man:

Slaid Cleaves.

Grew up in Maine.
Lives in Texas.
Writes songs.
Makes records.
Travels around.
Tries to be good.

'NUFF SAID ? NOT IN A LONETAPER TORRENT...

I’m glad I found Slaid
Cleaves, because my
life would have been
poorer without him.
You’ll feel the same,
I think, when you
listen to this
beautifully crafted
album. Listen, go to
one of Slaid’s shows,
take a friend, and
pass on the news:
not all the good
guys wear hats.

- Stephen King, 2009

Oh, my dear Stephen, you know i like your books
from the beginning you started writing (and nearly
nobody gave a shit...way back then in early 70ies...).

But what the hell took you SO LONG to discover Slaid ?
He grew up nearly in your neighborhood...

We discovered him about 15 years ago by recommendation
of our Texan friends, and this is a gig from his first
trip to Europe (remember ? I invited you to this show
here, but you have been too busy writing "Bag Of Bones"
and getting the Locus Award for "Desperation"...).

- Leo Lonetaper, 2010

Biography by Richard Skelly
The music of Austin-based singer/songwriter and guitarist Slaid Cleaves is rooted in
country and traditional folk songs, but it is unusual enough to hold interest in what
appears to be a sea of singer/songwriters in the 1990s. His debut, No Angel Knows, was
released on Rounder Records in 1997. Working with former Lucinda Williams guitarist
Gurf Morlix, Cleaves combines his passion for folk songs, blues, and traditional
country music on his debut into an amalgamation of styles known as "Americana" music.
Not surprisingly, No Angel Knows rode high into the charts at Americana-formatted radio
stations around the U.S. and Canada in 1997. Cleaves majored in English and philosophy
at Tufts University in his native New England, and began playing music in garage rock
bands while still in high school. While in college, he learned guitar, and later spent
a summer in Ireland. He began busking on the streets in Cork, and that was the turning
point when he decided to become a folksinger. At Tufts, he developed his guitar skills
and studied the music of Woody Guthrie and Bruce Springsteen. He recalled that he had
listened to the music of Woody Guthrie, Carl Perkins, and Hank Williams as a child, so
he went back into his parents' attic to discover a treasure trove of albums. After many
years in Portland, ME, he sought new mountains to climb, and found some of them after
moving to Austin, TX, in 1992. Despite the echelon of great singer/songwriters like
Jimmie Dale Gilmore, Lucinda Williams, Robert Earl Keen, Guy Clark, and Joe Ely all
centered around the Austin scene, Cleaves was able to make a name for himself there.
In 1995, he recorded an independent album for Rock Bottom Records entitled Life's Other
Side. In 1996, he began his collaboration with Morlix, who liked Cleaves demo tape a
whole lot and ended up serving as producer for No Angel Knows. Broke Down followed in
early 2000. The five-song Holiday Sampler appeared in 2001 from Rounder Records' Philo
imprint, as did 2004's Wishbones, while Unsung, released in 2006, was on Rounder proper.

About the recording:

The extremely successful European spring tour 1997 - Ray Wylie Hubbard was touring
with his partner in crime, Terry "Buffalo" Ware - in front of mighty impressed,
respectful cheering but for all that extremely enthusiastic audiences - attracted
a lot of attention at the Rounder Records headquarters. So they deceided to send them
back later the same year, together with two befriended labelmates and a fantastic band:

"The Travelling Troubadours Revue 1997", with

Slaid Cleaves

- was touring to promote his first national release,
No Angel Knows (1997) on Philo/Rounder, which shot to
#2 on the Gavin Americana radio chart after it's release,
garnering critial praise nationwide and leading to the
start of Slaid's recent worldwide touring schedule.

"He's got a melodic sense to match his narrative skills
and he draws as much from Rockabilly and Hank Williams
as he does from Vintage Bob Dylan....his sharp perspectives
and sharper hooks distinguish him almost as much as his name."
- Peter Margasak, Chicago Reader (Critic's Choice)

Carrie Newcomer

- Carrie first gained attention singing and writing in the
folk band Stone Soup, they recorded three albums together.
She uses styles other than folk, such as jazz, blues and rock,
and on this tour she was promoting her fourth solo album on
Philo/Rounder, My Father’s Only Son (1996).

"She has such an incredible knack for finding the extraordinary
in the 98 percent or more of life that is utterly ordinary. And
when life's amazing two percent kicks in, Carrie captures that
too. Her music is always tuneful, and Carrie's voice is a most
amazing instrument, full of warmth and comfort and yet so steady
and strong. Carrie Newcomer leaves tracks across the hearts of
listeners - those she's touched already, and those she's bound
to touch with this disc. You are bearing witness, as she sings
here, to a journey that's been well traveled."
- Marc D. Allan

Ray Wylie Hubbard

Oklahoma-born singer-songwriter Ray Wylie Hubbard started out as a
folk artist in the 1960s and later made fast friends with hitmakers
Michael Martin Murphey and Jerry Jeff Walker during the nascent years
of the '70s' Outlaw Country movement. Walker covered Hubbard's
"Up Against the Wall Redneck Mothers" on his popular Viva Terlingua
record, securing Hubbard's fate as a cult artist. After disappearing
from the music scene for a lengthy period of time and struggling with
personal problems, he re-emerged with not only his stellar songwriting
intact, but also a distinctly inventive fingering and bottleneck style.

Today Ray Wylie Hubbard is an elder statesman of the Texas music scene.
From New Braunfels, Texas, Hubbard hosts a Tuesday night radio show in
called "Roots & Branches". This program promotes new and established
Americana artists. Like some other performers in his genre, he is perhaps
as popular in Europe as in the US - and he brought his third album after
his comeback (1992) with him, which was his first Philo/Rounder release,
the beautiful Dangerous Spirits (1997).

PLUS their fantasic tour band, led
by another legendary guitar player:

Terry "Buffalo" Ware,
Jack Helsley, and
Jamie Reed.

This here is the first act of one of those nights,
Slaid Cleaves opening, just with his guitar and
harmonica. And after four songs solo he asked the
band onstage. There's nothing more left to say
except: the encore is with Carrie Newcomer...

GET THIS MONSTER HERE - ASAP !!

Another masterpiece by our friend
Frizze - one person on his own:
concert promoter, sound engineer and
concert taper - for sure another living legend.

KHG = Konrad Heresbach Gymnasium

Mettmann is a Rhenish town in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany, with
a population of around 40.000. It is the administrative centre of
the district of Mettmann, Germany's most densely populated rural
district. The town lies east of Düsseldorf and west of Wuppertal.
In the nearby Neanderthal, in the summer of 1856, quarry workers
discovered the fossilised remains of what became known as the
Neanderthal man or Homo neanderthalensis in Feldhof cave.

If you decide to download this show, won't you please consider posting a comment
on the show's board? It only takes a moment, and believe me, it takes A LOT longer
to prepare/upload a show for others to enjoy than it does to download and run...
