Sonny Hess Band
Waterfront Blues Festival
Portland, OR.
July 2, 2001

Again the WBF went off with some big names in the music world. The non-profit radio station, KBOO, here in Portland did the broadcasting again and there were lots of problems this year, as in other years. Many drops in reception which I attemted to "fix". Not all were broadcast, which was a bummer, and some were just to rife with problems to save. So there are some bumps in the road, if you will, but over all some nice tunes are here. Of note, the Preston Shannon set, James Harmon, Bobby Radcliff, Chris Cain Band, Ty Curtis Band and of course Lucinda Williams. So enjoy & spread the shows around, twofthrs.

FM>H2 Zoom> HDD>FLAC>Dime All files were sector aligned.
Since I'm not familiar with a lot of these bands there will be some "unknowns" in the set list's.

Sonny Hess was the first woman nominated in a male-dominated field for Best Lead Guitar by the Cascade Blues Association, and holds a CBA Muddy Award nomination for Lifetime Achievement. She has played with, sung with and composed with many of the region's top blues and soul artists, as well as played with Etta James, Jr. Walker and all-Stars, Average White Band and Bobby Womack. Sonny Hess i widely known for her productions of the Northwest Women in R&B show, seen by thousands of music fans over the past 15 years at Waterfront and many other regional festivals.

This year sonny brings her own band to the festival stage. Her set will feature new original music from her upcoming CD, All Aces, and spicy soul-fed tunes with funky overtones. Hess' kindness, generosity and affable nature belie the ferocity she exhibits while attacking the fretboard of her electric guitar. Hess bends the strings of her Paul Reed Smith with wild but controlled intensity.

From a low growl to a soulful vibrato, she sings what she feels. Then she hits you with guitar riffs that tell you she is still Smokin' and the band is lighting the fire.

"Wow, girl, where'd you get those New Orleans chops? You've got the mojo workin'"
