Lineage: Uncertain

The Sons of Champlin were, for me, the quintescential
1960's San Francisco Group, although they were from Marin
County and their heyday may have been in the 1970's.
Heavily hyped in their 1968 debut with a psychdelic
album cover, we all thought they were black. But they
were white kids from Marin and the East Bay.

This Sons concert catches the Sons in one of my favorite gigs,
King's Castle in Nevada, on the shore of Lake Tahoe. This
recording session was part of the "Goldmine" LP session.

The bootleg cassette tape was freely traded in the 1970's until
I discovered a single sided vinyl test pressing of the session in
a buddy's basement a few years ago, which must have been a
pressing by their engineer Bruce "Junior Walford.
Of course, no one connected with the Sons remembers much
about the gig, let alone the fact that a piece of vinyl
remains from the concert, other than the single "Goldmine"
song on the Goldmine Album.

I quickly transferred it to digital, gently removed some pops
and combined with my bootleg tape, I could piece together a couple
sets of this gig. There are some duplicates here, some are vinyl,
and some are from my bootleg tape. There is no precise order, because
at least on the vinyl, the cuts were faded out and tracked.

Bear in mind that the quality here is mixed--sometimes
the song is terrific stereo and other
times it is the bootleg tape which is a muddled
sort of stereo. But this is the Sons, and one of their
better concerts, so you gotta love it. If someone has a better
source for this concert, please please email me.

My favorite track happens to be No. 6 Hot Pants, with the
introduction, "California's Best Kept Secret, the Sons of
Champlin". Drummer Jim Preston is on fire on Lovelight and offers
to refund everyone's cover because he blew the end of a particular
song. Then, of course, there is Bill, who is continually complementing
the bartender, who is "One of the more professional bartenders"
he has met. Must have been a mean Tanqueray and Tonic, eh Bill?
This is a fun, good time, gig. I hope you guys enjoy it.
