Taper's Comments:

1 - HELP!! If you have any uncirculated SPIRIT shows, or better quality FM
broadcasts than what's been posted here before, please share them. If you
know anybody who has shows that fit this category that aren't on DIME, please
dub off their stuff and share it. I'm trying to write a book on SPIRIT and need
all the information I can get. I have a database of over 1500 gigs 1967-1996, and
want to find as much information as I can to add to it. If you have any memories
of where you saw SPIRIT, the more specific the better (venue, city, date, supporting
bands, etc.), I'd love to know that as well. Please leave that in the comments
section or PM me. Thank you!

2 - Show description & comments follow:

The "Lone Star Cafe" and "The Bottom Line" were my two fave venues in New York City,
and about the only two where I could see a show early enough to be able to make the
last train home to New Jersey. The "Lone Star" was in an old row home. Very narrow
and deep. The stage was more in the front of the place, across from the bar against
the wall, and in a lot of the club, the sightlines were poor. I always booked a seat early
in the balcony, looking straight down on the stage. The "Lone Star" had a real relaxed
atmosphere, and the staff were nice folks, at least to me.

Well, the "Trips Festival" about sums it up, as this was a weird show. Stoner City for sure!
Pretty lively audience. They announced several times prior to the show, that no taping was
to be permitted. It was the only time I ever heard an announcement like that in the "Lone
Star". I believe the band was recording this show for possible release, or had found somebody
selling bootlegs of previous shows. I have no idea for certain. Despite the no taping ban,
I saw more tapers per square inch than at any show I can remember! There were some
incredible rigs, all professional recorders, microphones on boom stands, etc. I sat with
some clown who seemed pretty wasted, who had such a rig. Real nice, but large deck, with
two Shure SM58 microphones duck taped to the railing in the balcony. It would have been
easily visible from the stage. He also seemed to think the whole table belonged to him,
despite the other three people who were sitting there. You'll hear some comments where
I ask for a bit of room. You'll also hear where he gets paranoid, and wants to place his
recorder on the floor, then continually moves it around, doing nothing but drawing attention
to himself. Well, why he ran off to the Men's room or wherever, the band roadie, who is
searching the club, finds his gear, and takes the tape during "All Worth The Price". Of
course, he thinks it's my gear! Anyway, it appeared they shut down everybody taping the
show, at least the ones who weren't stealth like me.

As to the show, KINGFISH opened, and nearly put me to sleep. Pretty boring stuff, at least
for me. Really enjoyed THE SOUNDS OF SAN FRANCISCO set, especially with the two great
guitars of Cipollina and Douglass. I was told that Joey Covington quit mid-set during the
second show, and had to be replaced for the balance of the tour. Maybe somebody can
elaborate on that? The band member that introduced his song during the set sounded a bit
sarcastic about it, so maybe that's what triggered the walk out? Anyway, enjoy!
