Being that this was a local station, the audio from this FM broadcast is nowhere near as compressed as the big, corporate radio stations is (and was back then too), so it sounds excellent.

I spot EQ'd some very small passages to minimize some very bad stage monitor feedback from T09(1 spot), T11(2 spots), T20(3 spots), T23(2 spots), T25(1 spot), T26(1 spot), T27(3 spots).

Broadcast the following night (12/31/1988) on Y107-FM, 107.1 out of Long Branch, NJ and recorded in my parents' home with an indoor dipole antenna just a few miles away. The signal was very clean.


The only band members that Johnny introduced were:
"Southside" Johnny Lyon - vocals, harmonica
Bobby Bandiera - guitar, vocals (lead vocals on Track 17)
George Ruiz - bass guitar, vocals
Tony Aiello - tenor saxophone
Obviously there is a drummer, keyboardist and more horns but I can't identify them.

Taper notes:
Before I was a jamband fan, I was a prog rock fan, but before I was a prog rock fan, I was a Bruce Springsteen fan (hey, I grew up in New Jersey, what can I say?!) and the "next best thing" to Springsteen may be Southside Johnny, one of Bruce's old musical buddies and even former bandmate. They were so close that Bruce gave "Southside" Johnny Lyon some of his best material to sing, and many of Bruce's cohorts (Steve Van Zant, for one) also worked with and/or wrote songs for Johnny.

For this, by far the oldest edition of my BARN series (#168), I present to you a recording of a show that I attended with old friend Brian Reiss, who I met in my freshman year of college and was also a live music fan, taper, and collector. He kept a car at school, so he was able to ferry us to all kinds of shows -- from Southside Johnny shows like this, to Jackson Brown, Warren Zevon, and we even went to my 2nd ever Grateful Dead show at Nassau Coliseum (3/29/90) together.

We went to this show together and interestingly enough they announced it was going to be broadcast the following day as a faux New Years Eve show on local Jersey Shore radio station Y107. So I made sure to stay at my parents' house (where I had had great reception to this station) on NYE to get this show recorded for everyone.

So now here we are 27 years later, and after chatting with my friend Bill who was working a show that Southside was playing at recently, I was inspired to break out these cassettes, transfer them the right way, and track and master them. My cassettes have held up perfectly and this recording sounds as if it was recorded yesterday -- and is filled with Southside Johnny classics like "Love On The Wrong Side Of Town", "I Played The Fool", "Talk To Me", "The Fever", "Trapped Again", and "Hearts Of Stone"; excellent covers like "Let The Good Times Roll", "Blue Christmas", a SUBLIME "Walk Away Renee", "Another Saturday Night", "Ain't That Good News", "Crying" (sung by guitarist Bobby Bandiera) in tribute to the then-recently-departed Roy Orbison, and Bruce Springsteen's "Fade Away". Even his then-current album "Slow Dance" was a solid effort whose songs are featured heavily on this show -- "On The Air", "Little Calcutta", "Slow Dance", and "Sirens Of The Night" are all a pleasure to hear.

This BARN series is dedicated to Brian (for getting me to the show) and Bill for inspiring me to break it out. :)
