* A great night of heavy rock/psych, at the soon to close Elbo Room Oakland. SÖNUS opened, Spiral Electric played second, and Older Sun played last. All local SF Bay Area bands, and all pretty cool, each in their own way. This is what local rock is all about.

* Spiral Electric is from the SF Bay Area, San Francisco, they've been around a while, and have released quite a few records.

"The final, East Bay Elbo Room — of the original two bars in both San Francisco (closed 2019, was on Valencia) and Oakland — is closing. The bar at 311 Broadway was known for live shows, moody lighting, and cheap drinks. The San Francisco Chronicle reports the owners are looking to move on with their lives; co-owner Matt Shapiro will move to Germany, and he and co-owner Erik Cantu say they feel this way they’ll close out on their own terms.

The original Elbo Room, located in the Mission District on Valencia Street, closed in 2018 after about 30 years. Cantu and Shapiro purchased that bar in 2010 after both had worked at the location, then opened the Elbo Room in Oakland in 2018. While sad news, fans can still look forward to shows and drinks through to spring of 2023, Shapiro says. Not only is there not a buyer lined up, but the dealmaking can take a while. “In the meantime, we will still be pouring drinks and throwing killer shows!” Shapiro wrote in a farewell email."

* This is a tiny club, upstairs from the bar, but has a good sound system for such a small space, when it is run right, which is not a given in my experience, but since they are moving on with their lives, that's neither here nor there.

Dan Healy (Grateful Dead sound engineer), on audience recordings:
"I learn a lot from hearing those tapes... The axiom that 'microphones don't lie' is a true one. If you put a microphone up in the audience and pull a tape and it doesn't sound good, you can't say, 'It was the microphone,' or 'It was the audience.' You've got to accept the fact that it didn't sound good. When you stick a mic up in the audience and the tape sounds cool, it's probably because the sound was cool. So it's significant to pay attention to the tapes."
