Taper's Comments:

1 - HELP!! If you have any uncirculated SPIRIT shows, or better quality FM
broadcasts than what's been posted here before, please share them. If you
know anybody who has shows that fit this category that aren't on DIME, please
dub off their stuff and share it. I'm trying to write a book on SPIRIT and need
all the information I can get. I have a database of over 1500 gigs 1967-1996, and
want to find as much information as I can to add to it. If you have any memories
of where you saw SPIRIT, the more specific the better (venue, city, date, supporting
bands, etc.), I'd love to know that as well. Please leave that in the comments
section or PM me. Thank you!

2 - Show description & comments follow:

"The Bayou" was a legendary club in the Georgetown section of Washington, DC,
located by the Potomac River, under an overhead section of the Whitehurst
Freeway. It lasted into the 21st Century, but it was closed because the property
was worth more as office space than a nightclub. What a loss. Many famous acts
played here on their way up or down, such as U2, SRV, Dire Straits, The Pretenders,
etc.

This was the first time I saw the band, despite being a fan since 1968. I spent years
moving around the country, and always seemed to be in a place the band wasn't. I
met my good friend Bob and some of his friends at the club, and we got a table right
close to the left PA stack. The sound mix was not the best, and things kind of sound
a bit "thick" until you get to Track 8, "Looking Down", when the clowns at the mixing
board finally figured out how to put more high end into the sound. Sound quality aside,
it was a great show, and a good way to be initiated with SPIRIT! They had built a
stairway from the center of the stage to the dance floor out of cases of beer, and
during "(Cold) Rain Night", Randy came down and played guitar in the audience. He
also did one of his wild guitar tricks, which I never saw him do again. Using the Sound-
On-Sound function in his Echoplex, Randy made a repeating tape loop of about five
different parts during his performance of "All Along The Watchtower". Then he put his
guitar down, and he and "Fuzzy" left the stage while Cass continued to play along! The
vast majority of the crowd couldn't understand how he had done it! There's some talking,
clanking beer bottles, and some other noises in some of the quiet sections, but nothing
that should ruin your enjoyment of this show. There was a huge TV camera focused on the
stage, and monitors all over the club, since some of the sightlines were poor. I've always
wondered if the shows were videotaped. Guess I'll never know. Enjoy!
