Tapers Notes:
Jazz Alley is one of the oldest jazz venues West of the Mississippi River. The venue always has top
knotch acts, and this show was no exception, Spyro Gyra.
Formed in Buffalo, New York in the late 70's by Jay Beckenstein and Rich Calandra, a local drummer,
the two produced a number of local acts and, when there was studio time left over, they would
record Spyro Gyra. Within a year they had sold tens of thousands of records, signed a record deal
and launched the band's career. In 1979, they moved to NYC to produce Morning Dance and lived
there for four years. Catching the Sun, Carnaval and Freetime were also recorded during this time.
Spyro Gyra has been their main focus and has fulfilled most of Beckenstein's musical dreams. It
has been over thirty-five years of great music.
