OK, I'll say it for you.. "don't I have this?" Not this one.

Here is why this is different...
-Private intervew clips with Steve earlier that afternoon
at Mercury Records.
-Soundcheck highlights that afternoon at the Roxy
-Defector Radio Ad (KROQ)
-Recorded front row center between Steve's twin Marshall stacks.
You hear his guitar mix as he hears it.

Please don't just go by the date marked.
To check what show you have...
listen to the beginning of Steve's greeting between the 1-2 song.
10-15 early -"So nice to be back at the Roxy"
10-15 late -"Welcome to the 2nd show at the Roxy"
10-16 early -"Ehh how are ya? Good?" (This recording)
10-16 late -"Good evening friends and welcome to the last show at the Roxy"
p.s. if anyone has "Night of the Acolyte" 1980-10-16 Late show complete with Hercules Unchained, I would really like to find that. To make up for me leaving after the early show this night and not taping the second show.

On October 16, 1980 I was invited to record the interview with Steve at Mercury Records on Sunset Blvd. It was my 2nd time meeting a Genesis Alumni. (I met Peter earlier that year)
The interview clips heard here, are part of a rough mix done back in 1980 to hear how it blended with the LP. This never aired anywhere, and has not been circulated before.

After the interview we went to the Roxy for the soundcheck. Then picked out the seats, front table, center, before the crowd came in.
(Just so there is no doubt that this really is the early show)

All the recordings (except the radio ad) are from the same mics and recorder. So you can see how mic placement makes all the difference, the soundcheck is recorded from inside a camerabag.
The equipment was borrowed and it was the only time I used this combination of mic and deck. The mics were Sony ECM-series lavalier/lapel mics They were ment to record something very close like a voice talking less than a foot away, not loud music or worse loud people yelling. So it had no headroom at all. The levels went from flat to pegged without much notice.

Back in 1980 when this was recorded, I was dissapointed with the results, so copies were made at the time to ride levels, compress, eq, etc... most too heavy and processed the whole concert for just a few minutes of flaws.

Then the master tapes were sealed in their tape cases and never used. Well I unsealed them and created a new digital master with second by second digital... cleaning, removing or fixing, of just the problems.
The result is one of the clearest Roxy tapes. Only some parts were distorted and I have done my best to repair only those parts without changing the original sound. This is the best this recording has ever sounded to my ears.
It was well worth saving.

Enjoy,
