comments:
I'm not a big fan of the Steve Miller Band, except for a few of
his albums. I have to say albums, since my 2 favorites of his have
never been released on CD (according to wikipedia), Rock Love (live)
and Recall the Beginning. too bad because my copy of rock love has
been thoroughly worn out and recall the beginning, either lost or
more likely stolen from me many years ago.
I got this, asking someone alot more into Steve Miller than I am,
if he had anything from that era. this is what I got. the early
70 Steve Miller shows are a different set than this, which was a
new band at the time. there wasn't much for 1970 Steve Miller at
all listed in etree, and this show was not mentioned. track 1
is just Steve's acoustic guitar and a couple of them singing,
and track 6 is a regular SMB tune but I couldn't recall the title
of it. As is true of Fleetwood Mac, most people like their Steve
earlier or later than I do, and partly for that reason, this is
not your typical Steve Miller concert. It's a tweener. After the
real bluesy stuff, before the pop goes the SMB stuff. Among my
far too limited collection of his music, this is my favorite
live Miller recording for set list. Steve says it's a new place
and a new band at start of track 2. track 7 is dedicated to
(and sounds a little like in the beginning) Jimi Hendrix.
I think track 5 is really called fandango but Steve introduces
it as kill and come play the drum, which suggests it was probably
still a pretty new tune at the time (or Steve was smoking some
particularly good weed that night).
this show is some blues, some rock, some acoustic, all things
Steve Miller excels in. the recording is quite good for a 1970 aud.
there's a little tape noise, but not alot (no dolby in lineage.) I
think alot of Steve's many fans will want to hear this (if they
haven't yet). I am familiar enough with the entire Rock Love album
to know, (it's a GREAT album, and so is recall the beginning...)
this is not including any of those performances, in fact none of
these songs are included in Rock Love release either.
Rock Love came out about 2 years after this and had another band
(another very good one). I didn't get what I was looking for when
I got this tape (songs of Rock love but different unreleased
performances of them) but I liked what I got anyway.
I think you will too.
