Taper's Comments:

1 - HELP!! If you have any uncirculated SPIRIT shows, or better quality FM
broadcasts than what's been posted here before, please share them. If you
know anybody who has shows that fit this category that aren't on DIME, please
dub off their stuff and share it. I'm trying to write a book on SPIRIT and need
all the information I can get. I have a database of over 1500 gigs 1967-1996, and
want to find as much information as I can to add to it. If you have any memories
of where you saw SPIRIT, the more specific the better (venue, city, date, supporting
bands, etc.), I'd love to know that as well. Please leave that in the comments
section or PM me. Thank you!

2 - Show description & comments follow:

This was a last minute show I found out from reading, I believe, THE AQUARIAN
WEEKLY, which was the local entertainment newspaper. I left work in New York
City, took the train to my normal stop in Brunswick Junction (New Jersey), and
headed to Piscataway and the gig.

The show was held in the gym at Livingston College on the campus of Rutgers
University. As I stood in line to enter the gym, I noticed that everybody in front
of me was getting the full pat down from security before they went in, and I
felt that they'd find my recorder for certain. Since I had just come from work,
I was still wearing my tie, and at the time, I was in my late 30's. The security
guard looked at me, and just waved me through, likely thinking I was somebody's
father! Who knows, this may be the only document of this gig?

There was no seating on the main floor, and being full of drunk and high college
students, I didn't think that would be a good place to record. There were bleachers
off to the left, and I positioned myself right on the end, as close to the left P.A.
stack as I could get. The gym was an acoustic nightmare. It was shaped like an
airplane hanger, or a huge Quonset hut. Every note came roaring back at you
echoing off the back wall and roof. The concert sounded like shit, but surprise,
surprise, the recording turned out WAY better than what my ears heard that night.
I wonder if any other tapers have experienced something like this?

This was my first of the two times I saw SRV. This was before he went to rehab,
and I kind of felt he was a little tipsy this night. The songs were jammed out
forever, and I had three tape flips, which wasn't my norm. The last time I saw
him was with the tour with Jeff Beck in 1989, after he had cleaned up his act.
Personally, I thought his playing had improved dramatically. Still, if one can play
like this being high, then there is no hope for any of you aspiring guitarists!

I had the pleasure of meeting Stevie at a record store signing on July 29, 1989
at "CROW'S NEST DIGITAL" in Naperville, IL. Easily the nicest person I ever met
in the music biz. He made you feel like you were some long lost friend he hadn't
seen in ten years. His autographs were beautiful penmanship, with a nice sentiment,
not the normal rock star scribbles that you can't even figure out who there are, if
you didn't already know. He was one of the greats, and is sorely missed.
