It was a different Stevie Ray Vaughan who gave 90 minutes of no-tricks, intensely personal technique to Friday's audience. The concert was pure emotion, and allowed for interaction with his Double Trouble band (drummer Chris Layton, bassist Tommy Shannon and pianist/organist Reese Wynans), players that until now had been relegated to time-keeping-sidemen status.
Vaughan mumbled only slightly embarrassed thanks through a series of standing ovations that followed fluid funk workouts like "Tightrope" (from the newly released LP In Step and a sampling of his strongest album tracks. Three times in the show ("Couldn't Stand The Weather" was one) he extended his fretboard through galvanizing crescendos of lightning control and technique, holding his tongue until the final song.
Accordingly, the clouds faded to black, Vaughan nodded with satisfaction and left the crowd with this homespun, endearingly simple realization: "I've learned that I'm only trying to make this world a slightly better place with this (guitar), and I've gotta take care of myself in order to do it.
