Notes:
In a well publicized incident, a woman named Eula Love was shot and killed by the LA Police in a dispute over her gas bill. Stevie decided to hold a $100/seat benefit concert to benefit her small children. Stevie chose the Roxy in Hollywood for the event. The Roxy only seats 450 people -- it's a very famous small night club in Hollywood.

I was sitting dead center in the Roxy. There were stars all around. Actor Tony Curtis announces Stevie Wonder at the beginning of the concert. I saw Lavar Burton, Bette Middler, Mayor Tom Bradley; and of course the guest artists: Teena Marie, Jermaine Jackson, Betty Wright, and Buddy Miles. There's probably a few people I'm forgetting...but you get the picture.

Part way through the concert, Stevie announced he would give the audience the opportunity to pick one of the songs on his next album (Hotter Than July). He was going to play three songs, and ask the audience which song they wanted on the album.

He played:
Reflections Of You
Ribbons In The Sky
Lately

After playing all three songs, promised to work with his friends and family to determine which song received the best response. He once again promised the audience to place the song with the best response on his next album. The audience gave the loudest response for Lately, and that song did indeed appear on Hotter Than July.

Listen closely between "Ribbons in the Sky" and "Lately" and you'll hear two ladies in the audience yell "Overjoyed!" I seriously doubt they were referring to their state of mind at seeing Stevie at the Roxy. Instead, they were calling out the name of his FUTURE song: "Overjoyed" -- which didn't appear on an album until five years later (1985). Obviously these ladies knew Stevie in some capacity and were familiar with his songwriting and studio works -- even his unreleased songs.

Keep in mind I was 20 years old when this concert was taped, and I tried to take the best care I could of the master tapes, but accidents did happen. Even though I only played my master tapes on the original equipment (Nakamichi tape deck) or my car stereo (also a Nakamichi cassette deck), the beginning of the tape, and one or two other parts became mangled in the tape transport mechanism, and you'll hear some 'garbling' on the tape at the locations where this happened.

My master tape was stolen in 1987, long with 23 other master tapes. With help of some friends, I managed to track down a 1st Generation copy of my master. I used this copy for CD master of the show. Unfortunately, this copy was made AFTER the mangling damage had occured to the original master. Also, the last side of the last tape of this 1st-Gen copy had speed variation problems, which I believe I successfully fixed on the computer. If the last 20-30 minutes sound a little weird, you'll know why. I tried to remove as much tape hiss as possible through computer software, but sometimes it may sound a little thin. It's been 4 or 5 years since I've listened to this concert, and in my opinion, I could probably do a better job mastering it to CD today than I did long ago. Maybe some day you'll see a remastered version of this show.
